Following on from my other thread, my white guinea pig Sammy has been treated for a UTI for just over 2 weeks now after I noticed bloody urine in the cage. Last Wednesday she had investigations done at the vets and they removed a bladder stone around 0.75cm long under sedation from her urethra. I took her back on Friday as noticed the bleeding was still there and they removed another little bit.

Over the weekend she had done ok, and was on Baytril 0.5 twice a day plus Metacam for pain relief.

Tuesday I thought we were getting there as her belly had dried up and her bottom wasn't leaking. The medicine ran out Tuesday and I took her back for the weekly check up to th vets yesterday when they kept her in again and removed some more stone.

Just been to check her this morning and there is loads of blood around her bottom and when I put some kitchen towel on my lap to give her the medicine, it's quite wet with red blood.

Am now sat in tears as don't know what to do. She was climbing the cage and just ate some grass and hay. She's been off food a bit and fussy as wont eat pellets or drinking much water.

I don't want her out to sleep unnecessarily as I would never forgive myself as it my sons pet but I feel like I am putting her through pain and stress.

Please help : (

Just used some cotton wool and warm water and manage to clean off a bit from her fur so hoping it may look worse as she's been sat in the same place overnight.

Will keep giving her the medicine, regularly change the bedding and give her food she wants to eat and hopefully she will be a fighter as she normally is and get better x

I'm not experienced enough to answer your question fully - but you are right to keep giving her her medicine. Also, Baytril affects appetite which might be why she is off her food. Giving some probiotic about an hour after her Baytril can help.

I would give your vet a ring and see if she needs to go back for a check up.

Please speak to your vet today, Was it your other thread I mentioned Glucosamine or Cystease on? It is likely she has a lot of inflammation so either of these would help. Also if there is an infection too then Septrin may well be more effective than Baytril. Is she still on Metacam?

I think a follow up xray or scan would be a good idea to check there are not more stones.

Please also syringe her some water throughout the day to help flush things through.

Ditto what Helen said, please go back to the vets today. Septrin or Marbocyl are more effective antibiotics, Metacam is needed for pain relief, split into 2 doses a day. Ask your vet about Cystease too, but if they are happy to give her an injection of Cartrophen that may give her some relief too, my piggy is on a jab once a month of Cartrophen. I would say she may need sedation & a scan, although they might be able to do an ultrasound conscious.
