Hi there,
So lately our guinea pig has struggled with blood in his urine and also squeeks when he passes poo we have been to an out of hours vet which said it could be a suspected UTI so he has been on beytril and metacam fast forward a week to now and he is still squeaking with slight blood in his urine but a minor improvement overall, we also did take him to another vet yesterday had a check up and his urine sampled but no crystals were detected and no bacteria but red blood cells present and now is currently on additional medication being, Metacam, beytril and cysticalm we have been given an additional week to see if he improves with the squeeking and blood in urine but just wanted to know if anyone else has had these issues?

Oh perfect thats really good to know . I'm just a little worried as the vet found some calcium in his wee when it was drawn into the syringe and worried it might be stones but were not 100% sure as the vet said no threat to life at the moment so x ray and ultra sound wasn’t needed

Hi and welcome

Your piggy could be in the early stages of a sterile cystitis (i.e a non-bacterial infection that mainly attacks the natural glucosamine coating of the urinary tract) if there is no indication of crystals, a stone or bacteria in the urine.

Please take the time to read this link here. You may find it helpful as it gives you an overview of the problems of the urinary tract, including sterile cystitis: Wiebke's Guide to Pees and Stones

Cysticalm is a glucosamine based product for cats with extra calming ingredients. I cannot say whether they also work for rodents but your vet is obviously covering all bases at the moment.

Thank you so much for this information i will have a read on it now. Its so tricky as all symptoms are so similar to different things. The only thing that the vet picked up was calcium in his wee when it was drawn into the syringe which she said it could be a stone but no crystals present as of time.

Just a little update on rolo-☺️
We took rolo back to the vet yesterday and it was diagnosed that we had a bladder stone and it needed to be removed as soon as possible.

This is rolo post surgery recovering any suggestions?IMG_3573.webp

What a beautiful boy 💜 He seems nice and alert. Have you got Critical Care and a probiotic to encourage him to keep eating and digesting. It's great that he is on fleece which is nice and soft. Weighing him each morning first thing will give you a clear picture of whether he is eating enough hay so that you will know whether he needs support feeding and how much he needs. Good luck Rollo 🙏
