Hi everyone

I'm not sure if people might have been following on the health and illness board but I've been battling for a little while with my girl scruff pot, she has been ongoing bloating issues and has been diagnosed with ovarian cysts which we are in the process of treating.

Now for the question... I have got to travel for work reasons in a couple of weeks for 3 nights. And unfortunately I won't be able to leave my girl with anyone that I know..

I have therefore been thinking about the possibility of using a guinea pig boarding service and so far am quite impressed with this one: http://www.londonsmallanimalboarding.co.uk

It says it's run by a veterinary nurse and they have the capability of administering medication if Scruff is still on it by then.

I was wondering if anyone in the London area has ever had to use boarding and if so who you used and what your experience was like.

I'm obviously extremely apprehensive at the idea of having to leave her anywhere at the moment - but there is a small chance that I will have no choice.

Of course if it really came down to it and she was very ill when I needed to leave I would have to cancel and deal with the consequences... But just in case I do go does anybody have any advice for a very nervous mummy?

Thanks as always

Any suggestions anyone? X

Not had to use boarding in London but I would suggest the best thing is to go and see the veterinary nurse at the boarding place you have found and explain the situation? You can get a good idea about what she is like and her set up. Maybe a good idea to call your vets as well and ask if they know of anyone? Maybe one of their own vet nurses who knows your guinea could help...always worth asking?

Always good to see if they have reviews but also make a list of questions and make and apt prior to visit and see what the place and te people running it are like. You can usually get the vibes if they are going to be what your looking for x

Have a look round their premises see if there are any others then decide.
Maybe you could call a previous piggy owner who has boarded his/her puggies there?

I haven't actually used crumpets before, but I have been following her site for about a year. Unfortunetly I live just a little bit too far from her otherwise I would have already. From all the research I've done over the last year she deffinetly looks the best. I had noticed that in the past few months they have upgraded a lot of their accommodation and now even offer whole 'free range' rooms for guests.

I'm not too sure where in London you are based, but I found Laura at HappyFeetPets to be amazing and very knowledgable, she now lives in Essex however, so could be too far away.

I hope Scruff gets better soon.

Thanks so much for all of your advice everyone - I have a vets appointment on Monday so I will will ask her then if she has any thoughts of people to suggest.

Although if things remain the way they are at the moment I wouldn't like to leave her - still lots of massaging.

The thing I have found with most boarding places I have looked at is that they will take piggies with health conditions and administer medications but won't consider ones with anything they seem as immediately life threatening. Although I don't think scruff a condition is currently at that state she is still suffering from gas issues - which can obviously turn quickly.

Again thanks to you all for your advice and suggestions so far! X

And I'm based in Deptford SE London so I think Essex might just be a bit far

Ah Deptford, I live in Lewisham so not too far from there. Unfortunately the currently lady I use to board mine I wouldn't recommend for your situation, she is a lovely girl and offers a great level of care but mainly boards rabbits. With Scruffs bloat issue's and cysts I can understand that you'd want the upmost very best care for her, with somebody who understands piggies.

It's been extremely hard to find a good London based guinea pig boarder, had thought I'd found 'The One' with Laura, but then she went an moved.

I do hope you are able to find somewhere, Crumpets does look like a fantastic option. Like Rosie and Bramble have said above they should be more than fine with you popping over beforehand.

What a small world it is for you to be so close :)

I know there definitely seems to be a big gap in the market for specialist piggy boarders!

Scruff had a procedure for her cyst last week, well she was meant to - we had planned to aspirate it and when the vet went to so it they discovered it had burst right there and then. Unfortunately it's this bloating and gas we can't shift, although to look at her behaviour you'd think she was the picture of health - she's becoming quite the enigma!
