Hi all:)
I just wanted to make a post, I guess for possibly some peace of mind. I have tried contacting the vets thismorning (still trying) but their lines are busy and no one seems to pick up when I call.
Whilst feeding my guinea pig Sage thismorning I noticed he’s a little wheezy when chomping. He eats his fresh veg every morning at the speed of light as he’s obsessed with food, and always ends up coughing halfway through before carrying on.
Since I’ve had him, he’s had a very slight almost unnoticeable occasional wheeze which has never concerned me, it’s only recognisable when he’s stressed (which turns into an uncomfortable sequence of squeaks) or has fresh wood shavings (assumed the dust got in his nose) and his bed was cleaned last night. He’s never lost considerable weight, never off his food or water, and he’s free roaming- never been inactive. He’s full of his normal character and has no weeping around his eyes or mucus of any sort so I don’t think it’s a respiratory infection but could be wrong.
I’ve attached a video just for reference. I will still contact the vets, even if it stops. But I was just wondering if anyone has heard similar in their pigs and could ease my mind that he’s not poorly as he’s my literal best friend.
TIA:)

Due to the narrow airways piggies have, any obstruction from dust in the will cause noisy breathing. Eating too fast will cause coughing, again small airways.

If the noise is coming from the nose then it is most likely dust obstruction. From the chest is a different matter and is potentially more concerning.

However, do have a vet check carried out because breathing is never something leave unchecked if you are concerned.

it’s not letting me attach a video, but he seems to be breathing normal again now.
I will definitely make an appointment with the vet, as like you said it’s best to have it checked.

A video needs to be uploaded to YouTube first and then a link to it posted here. We can’t host video directly on the forum.

If it is only happening when he is eating and he eats fast then it is likely nothing to worry about but do let us know how you get on with the vet.
