Ok, my 10 month old guinea pig Bump is really really ill. He hasn't been eating and drinking for 3 days now, although he does attempt to nibble at certain veggies every now again then gives in. This all started after trimming his back end as he is very very fluffy!

A trip to the vets gave him Metacam and Baytril injections and told to give Critical Care as much as, which we have been doing.

We got up this morning and was still the same, poops was dry as bone which indicated dehydration so we booked the vets again for a follow up appointment. He has been out for a small run around my room for 2 hours which to me was an improvement. We got to the vets and he told me Baytril orally which we are doing now and every 2 hours give him CC again, so tonight me and my partner will be up most of the night and early hours of the morning feeding him. His weight yesterday was .750g today he is .730g which is very very worrying.

Wondered if anyone has had the same problem as us? Any advice is much appreciated. He is well looked after, I do have other piggies and all spoilt to death but he is my only long haired breed. Love him to death, trying my best to keep him happy as possible.

Hi there

For a pig that isn't eating at all for themselves the aim is to get 120ml of syringe food in over 24 hrs. Usually you can get 20-30ml per feed every 3-4 hours. If you can only get a lower amount in you'll need to feed more frequently.

For every 5ml of feed that goes in please give 2-3ml of water, despite the syringe feed being a wet mix they still need the extra fluids.

This link can be useful - it also shows how to adapt a 1ml syringe to make the feeding easier.
