I wonder if anyone can help me today I spotted a round, raised hairless area on my guinea pig's bum. It appears to be a lump. Has anyone dealt with this? We are planning to take him to to the vet next week but we are just looking for some comfort whilst we wait.

Hi

There is unfortunately a whole range of harmless and some not quite as harmless lumps that piggies can get. Some piggies have more of a genetic disposition than others, who can get several of them. They often become more common the older a piggy gets.

Cysts and lipomas (fatty lumps) and trichofolliculomas are generally harmless; abscesses (usually from a bite wound) need dealing with. Cancerous lumps in that area are thankfully very uncommon. The fact that the lump has been barbered and the hair has been removed rather points to some discomfort, though.
Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do on spec until he can be seen but keeping the lump disinfected in case the skin gets broken. Homemade saline will do (mix 1 teaspoon of salt into 250 ml of boiled, cooled water).

If the lump suddenly starts to grow fast or even burst, then it should be seen sooner.
Good that you have an appointment booked because it needs a hands-on examination.
Wishing you all the best.

Good luck at the vets. Both my piggies have cysts at the moment. They are harmless but sometimes need removing. I’ve had a piggy with an abscess too. That needed antibiotics. But again he was fine afterwards.

I hope it’s something easily treatable 🤞🏻
