When I firgt got my 2 pigs, I went and bought them a chew kabab- basically a bunch of little chew blocks on a stick, that you can attach to the cage bars. Complete fail! All they did was accidentally bang into the thing mallethead !
So, I've taken the actual blocks off the kabab and scattered them around the cage. I also rubbed them with fresh grass so they would smell good.

So far, all they've done is sniff them and walk by {:| Well, I was just wondering:

Do they actually use them?
Do they need them?
What should I do?

Thanks! Help appreciated xoxo x>>

I've found that most pigs completely ignore the toys that are meant to keep them from getting bored and are a bit of a waste of money.

Pigs seem to prefer the simple things - toilet rolls split down the middle and stuffed with posh hay and a bit of veg are a favourite and can be suspended to make them work harder for their treat.

A brown paper bag stuffed with hay is always a bit hit.

Cardboard tunnels, if you ask in a carpet shop you can often gat the tubes for free and just cut them up with a jigsaw into 8-10" lengths, for the 'fuller figured' pig the lino tubes are usually wider.

Lounging logs - wooden sticks on some wire that can be bent to form a tunnel/bridge, the pigs do seem to enjoy nibbling these.

Any thing made of fleece seems to need to be tunneled under and popcorned on so very good for exercise.

I agree, anything i have ever bought for my boys have gone unused :)) They prefer toilet roll tubes, paper bags, cardboard boxes. They tend to chew things they shouldnt, i imagine these are more interesting! I did buy some fiddlesticks which they use as a cave and they love to chew this. I agree about the fleece too, all my boys LOVE a blanket hung from the top of the cage, they love to snuggle and use it as a hidey.

I never thought to ask at a carpet shop, thanks for this idea.

We have more toy ideas in this thread from our reference section:

You will generally find that the cheapest and simplest are the best. Piggies like to get rid of some destructive energy occasionally, so get things where it doesn't matter and they are allowed to have some real fun!

PS: Lots of hay is much better for keeping the teeth short - the front teeth usually only overgrow when the back teeth are not worn down properly.

My boss at work asked me to fetch something a while back from a cupboard we rarely use - she had saved loads of strong cardboard tubes from the tons of promotional posters we get. Thought that was really sweet of her :rose
The piggies love them :(|)

I agree completely!

My boys love the brown paper bag that our takeaway curries come in. They love to chew it, hide in it, run around bopping it or put their heads thru the handles and run round dragging it like an idiot...

It's a good excuse for a curry too!

I've found (out of 13 guinea pigs) not a single one has liked any of the guinea pig treat products or gnawing blocks.

My boys love all hay products - hay circle balls & houses as they can be pulled apart.

I've also found they love a wooden barrel that my husband bought for them (even though it's for hamsters) & can often hear them gnawing on it.

So apart from that they prefer the simple things - toilet roll holders & shoe boxes! :))

Mine love to chomp on toilet roll tubes with hay in. They completley ignored the nice chew block they have:))
