Hi all,

I have had a look for similar posts but I think this scenario is quite specific!

We have a c&c set up with 4 rescue piggies. We have a house rabbit (that they never see because he's on the floor and they're on a table) and sometimes we look after our friends rats with no problems. They're in the same room but they don't care.

Anyway, my other friend brought her rats round and we set up their cage and after about 30 mins I hear the loudest chirping noise that I've never heard before!

Should I assume this was a scared noise? The rats have gone home now because they were upset by the guinea pigs and started fighting.

Thanks for any info!

What chirping actually means is something that people haven't really figured out yet. It's tempting to attribute it to something new in the environment (like the rats), but I think it's an unknown. I've had some pigs chirp and have never found any rhyme or reason to it... there were no changes in the environment that I could see, they didn't seem agitated or upset, it always seemed pretty random. For what it's worth, my guinea pigs seem to be pretty oblivious to other small animals in the vicinity as long as those animals are quiet- for instance, they will startle if a dog barks or something, but when we have them at the cottage we will have semi-tame chipmunks come right up to their outdoor pen and peer at them through the bars and they never even pay attention or even acknowledge that they see the chippies, so I'm not sure that they would find rats that worthy of notice as long as they were not within touching distance!

One time I had removed the wooden ledge from inside the cage and Misty started chirping in the night, which I think was because she was upset by the change but I don't really know. When other piggies have done it, I haven't seen any reason.

Thanks for getting back to me! None of them seem traumatised but I think It's best if the ratites don't stay again.
