Hello! I just got a baby guinea pig (she is 6 weeks, I’ve had her since June 11) when I first got her I noticed once in a while she would do something that sounded like a cough.. no other symptoms she’s happy, spunky, energetic, and eating everything in sight. I have been noticing she does it more frequently now. I listened to her breathing with a stethoscope, she makes no noise and is perfectly fine other then making this noise that sounds like a cough or choke maybe like 5 times spaced throughout the day. I was hoping someone could give me some advice being that I am still paying off the $600 vet bill from putting my mocha to sleep in the beginning of June. Again, no crusty, discharge in her eyes and she is perfectly normal except this sound. Any ideas?

Mine sometimes cough when they are eating their veggies too fast but it’s not a regular occurrence. Have you noticed it at a particular time, such as just after adding food or hay? It may be an idea to get her checked out by a vet just to make sure she doesn’t have a upper respiratory tract infection.

What bedding do u use and when your buying hay do u try buy dust free where is here cage is it near a dusty part of your house

I too was wondering about the bedding used and whether she could be eating too fast?

But any coughs (that are not due to the above) should really be checked by a vet.

My Edward had a hooting cough. We took him to the vet who couldn’t find anything wrong. Turned out he was allergic to the bag of hay I was using at the time

Hi! Is she coughing while or shortly after eating?

I use oxbow hay. Always have I’ve never changed it. I just keep thinking if it was URI she would have deteriorated a lot by now. She did it for the first time like June 12. A day after I got her. Isn’t that a long time for her to have a URI and no other symptoms?

She literally has NO other symptoms she’s spunky, has a healthy appetite, gives me plenty of piggytude bc she doesn’t yet know what chin rubs are lol. I just had another piggy pass and it was like she got sick and she had to be put down days later. So I can’t see this much younger Guinea pig (she was 3 weeks when I got her) lasting a month with a URI with absolutely no change in behavior except she coughs a few times a day.

It could just be a dusty batch of hay may be? I really don’t know what to suggest as yes, you would expect her to be quite poorly by now

Hi my piggie coughs while squeaking sometimes
And sometimes while she is eating quickly.

Is your piggie a squeaker at all?

She is but it hasn’t happened while she is squeaking (she is still very young) so she is very vocal lol. I have been keeping an eye on it and it’s been happening a lot less
