Guinea Pig Crusty Eye

Hi guys,
One of my guinea pigs, Jerry, has been getting some crust around his eye, especially when I see him in the morning. I read that it could be a symptom of a URI, but besides that, he has been acting completely normal with no other symptoms. I've been noticing crust on his eye showing up for the past week or two and I have just been wiping it off with a damp paper towel. Can you guys please help with any recommendations? Thank you!

I can't see anything?

Please be aware that the crusts connected with a URI are thick yellowish/greenish dried mucus crusts from a well developed and settled in URI; you would also also have some crackly or wheezy breathing connected with that. It is never the first symptom at the onset of an upper respitary tract infection. A respiratory infection in guinea pigs is bacterial and not viral like a human cold or flu, so symptoms are not quite comparable.

You can get three different crusts in guinea pig eyes:
- Milky white bits of crust from dried eye cleaning fluid that as not been re-absorbed by the tear duct.
- Translucent crusts as the result of clear eye fluid, which in guinea pigs is used to wash out any irritants in the eye, like hay or bedding dust or hairs.
- Thick yellowish/greenish dried mucus in eyed and around nostrils from an untreated settled in URI that has descended on the upper airways.

Yours seems to be the translucent variety; if it is persistent, then please see a vet. it can be either something small stuck under the lid, a non-ulcerating injury or a sign of a conjuctivitis.
