hi all, i’ve just come upstairs to notice the cage covered in blood and my guinea pig has clearly cut his foot after looking at it. he’s eating, drinking but obviously in pain. i’ve got an appointment at the vet first thing tomorrow but is there anything i can do tonight? i’ve tried wrapping it best i can and I'm not sleeping much tonight to check on him. he’s separated from his friend and ive put him in a spacious carrier with lots of soft flooring. ive followed the advice from the vet on the phone of wrapping it, but can i do anything else? any advice would be great! the bleeding seems to have stopped but i just want to make him as comfortable and safe as possible.

Poor boy, I hope he gets better soon. Soaking it for a couple of minutes in a mild salt solution and then flushing it to get rid of any grit, hay dust etc might be good as long as it doesn't start to bleed again.

i’ll try that thank you, i’m just leaving it be for a little while as he was really shook up after it with me having to apply pressure and handle him. once he’s calmed down i’ll see if it’s bleeding and soak it.

I hope it heals up well 🙏

I’m glad you have managed to drop the bleeding.
I hope he is ok.
First aid is to apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Any bleeding which doesn’t stop within five minutes needs an emergency vet trip.

I would also add to not allow him to be separated from his friend for long. It’s stressful for them to be separated but if the separation goes on too long you have to go through the full neutral territory rebonding (you can’t just put him back in the cage with his friend) to ensure they will go back together.

thank you, luckily the bleeding stopped after a couple minutes as i kept checking on him throughout the night. they’re only being separated whilst i made sure there was no more bleeding and i cleaned all the blood out their cage so he will be back with his friend by tonight as long as all goes well. unfortunately though I'm not sure what caused it and wether it was a fight, I'm going to ask the vet and see in case i need to keep them permanently separated.
this morning he’s a lot brighter than last night, he’s screaming for food and eagerly waiting for me to get him out now and check him over again just before the vet lol. it’s his first time going as he’s a somewhat new piggy here so wish him luck!

all went well! he was really good at the vet just frozen in fear sometimes. luckily the cut is on the foot which i thought it was- and she can’t feel any other cuts on him. it had already scabbed over so she said it’s fine, he’s all healthy! i’ve already put him back in his cage and he’s definitely happy to be back

Glad he’s doing fine.
It’s a worry when you see an injury like that, but it sounds as if it’s healing well.

it is! i’ve got some pain meds spare from last procedures he can be on if i notice he’s still in pain
