My guinea has bad dandruff on his back end and when i try to look he jumps in pain. How do * get rid of dandruff? x

It isnt dandruff, chances are he has mites as you say it is on his rump. He needs to go to the vet for ivermectin, this is the only treatment-no shampoos will kill mites. It isnt expensive, around £20 for the two treatments or less.

Mites live under the skin and all gps have them but sometimes they multiply and then cause a problem. It needs to be treated ASAP as it can cause skin sores, fitting and even death if left.

thankyou lavenderjade!

thankyou for your info i will show my mum and hopefully Douglas will feel loads better! x

Aww i hope he gets treated soon.

Do you know how mites are caused?

All guinea pigs have mites under their skin already, they are not usually noticable and dont cause a problem. It is hard to say why they may multiply but sometimes can due to stress, poor living conditions, after illness, poor diet, pregnancy (in sows) but sometimes it just happens! Three of mine have had mites and they are the most spoilt pigs :))

The other slight possibility is a fungal infection which is less common, but treat for mites in the first instance. This is the most likely explanation and is pretty common ;) xeno 450 is a topical ivermectin which most vets use now for adult pigs, injections are painful for the guinea and a skin scrape for diagnosis is totally unecessary and expensive so if they suggest one say no!

Ivomec dosage is 2 drops by mouth followed after 10-14 days by another 2 drops by mouth.

The alternative dose is 0.2ml subcutaneously, ie by injection, followed after 10-14 days by another 0.2ml sub. cut.

Many pig owners have their own Ivomec supply, see if there is anyone near you who can oblige.
Ivomec is about £40 for a 50ml bottle.
Using 0.4ml total at a cost to the owner of £20 means that the bottle becomes worth
a total of 50/0.4x20=£2500... Look for a local owner..

I think that is ok for an experienced guinea owner but in this case, it may be wiser to visit the vet. I get the topical xeno 450 online but I know others on here do too but an overdose by an inexperienced owner could have dangerous consquences.

hi blondie kate! Are * in middle school to? do * have any guinea pigs, if * do what are they called. I have 2, 1 called Douglas and the other Maisie. Thanks for wishing my guinea pig get well....lol x

Anyone, expert or beginner, can give an overdose of any drug, either to an animal or to a human being.
There has to be a first time for any owner to give their pig a drug. 2 drops can be given from an eye dropper and, if only 2 drops are put into it, there can be no risk of an overdose. If needs be, practise giving the pig 2 drops of water until you have gained confidence in your ability.
