My baby just died a couple of hours a go and i really want to find out what caused his death. So i was wondering if anyone can help me out.
He was 4 years old and was really healthy until 4 months a go when he suddenly started eating less and his poo started to build up in his stomach. He became week and started to move less and chewed very slowly too. Took him to the vet, they injected him with something i cannot remember what it was.
Please if anyone can help i would appreciate it a lot.

Thank you

Hello, first of all let me say how sorry I am for your loss. Losing a pet is painful and my heart goes out to you.

Without knowing their medical history, it would be impossible to say what caused your piggies death. A vet can perform a post morteum but Guinea pigs hide illnesses well and unfortunately can deteriorate very quickly.

What was your piggies name? You may wish to write a memorial thread for them in our Rainbow Bridge section of the forum.

Once again so sorry for your loss.

Hi! I am very sorry for your loss! It is always very upsetting.

Could you please clarify some points for me:
- how soon did you have him seen by a vet? Straight away when he was not eating properly or just at the end?
- did he suffer from impaction and did you clean it out regularly? See video: Impaction Recovery - How To Help Your Guinea Pig.
- did you start syringe feeding when we started losing weight to help him eat and keep up his weight?
- did your vet ever check his teeth?

If your boy was simply not able to eat properly because of discomfort for several months, then his guts will have eventually slowed down, he would get weaker and weaker and in the end his body would have closed down.

As you don't now what your vet gave him and at what point, I cannot make any guesses whether that helped any or not.

As to the reasons, there are many which without a proper vet diagnosis and a costly post-mortem examination it is simply impossible to say. it can range from overgrown teeth, pain/infection caused by an uncleared built-up impaction or a number of other causes.

The pain is hard but he has gone to a better place.

It started around the end of summer 2015 and i took him to the vet at October.
I left for university and he became weaker. He did become better during Christmas holidays and there was nothing wrong with him until yesterday. My dad sent me videos of him a few days a go but then yesterday my brother just came down and saw him lying there breathing slowly so he facetimed me so i can be with him for his last moments :(
He did suffer from impaction, he was not pooping like he normally did. His teeth were healthly and my mum fed him eveyday while he was sitting on her lap.
