Guinea pig deeper breathing

Vet doesn’t think it’s an infection based on his bloods so we’re stopping those meds, tried to scan him doesn’t think it’s fluid round the heart but he was moving too much he said he can do it again and sedate him but not sure I want him to have that as that’s a lot of stress for him. It could be something in his lungs, he’s had an injection incase there’s fluid in them, I’m on a feeding routine and he kindly gave me a different emergency food which is much easier to feed.
Just keeping an eye and feeding atm, I don’t know how old his is as I rescued them from a school where they were loaded up with veggies on a Friday and they came back to them Monday! A family member brought them back over the Christmas break last year, I ended up having them in my home and didn’t return them after I heard they wanted to put them up for adoption as they were harder work than they thought, don’t agree they just needed love and attention.
I’ll follow the vets guidance and advice as I’d never want him to be in pain or not have the best quality of life, vet was great stayed an hour after closing to care for him too.
If anyone needs an exotic vet East Midlands way Bozzles Ark has just opened up and he is taking patients and has pet plans

I am keeping my fingers crossed. He is so lucky to have found such a loving forever home and such a caring and dedicated owner. All you and your vet can do is play it by ear and see how it develops as you have quite obviously spotted the issue early on.

Could you please post the the vet details and a link to the website on this thread here so we can upload the info onto our vet list on the top bar. We are always keen to have locally recommended vets for as many areas as possible. :)

Thank you, I appreciate your kind words and I’m glad they’re loved and happy in their forever home. We’re doing the feeding as that’s the main thing atm getting food in his system, the vet told me to call today and update him as he’s clearly invested in his pet patients.

Heartbroken to say my Lloyd passed over the rainbow bridge today. He was struggling with his breathing and when I took him in as they advised for another shot/possible steroids when we got there the vet came out of surgery to check him himself and advised he thought it was his heart and it was time.
They were so lovely, they cuddled him and let me sit with him for about an hour on my own in a private room. I have lovely paw and nose prints, they also kept some of his fur for me and haven’t even made me pay for anything yet until I’m ready after his cremation (we’re moving and I want to make sure he’s with us).
Thank you all so much for this kind supportive beautiful community.
I’ve been cuddling my Harry, I know he also needs to grieve too and when ready I’ll know I can reach out to this wonderful community for guidance if we do adopt another as i’d hate for him to be lonely x

BIG HUGS

I am very sorry. I have been wondering; but it can be often difficult to tell for a vet. Fluid can build up in the lungs, the chest or the body with congestive heart failure. There is not a lot you can do; when an organ fails in guinea pigs it happens on fast forward because of their much quicker metabolism. :(

Treasure those last moments with Lloyd. He will have made his journey to the Bridge knowing how loved and cared for he was.

PS: We have now got a designated End of Life/Bereavement section to support piggy owners during the most difficult times. You are welcome to ask any questions or just ask for some ongoing moral community support whenever needed. The grieving process is not as straight forward as many imagine and it can take you to some pretty weird places.

I appreciate your kindness and for the guidance too. The vet actually called me last night to send condolences and said he was suprised how quick he changed from Monday and he was sorry he couldn’t be with me when I was with him as he’d had to rush back to the surgery he left specifically to see Lloyd.
I’ll never forget my tricoloured, nosey, loud, confident boy x
