Hi.
My 3 1/2 year old boar Niles has had dental problems recently. He had an overgrown tooth, and we took him to a couple of vets because we were looking for a vet who was confident working on Guinea pigs. We found someone, paid over £200 for his dental work, and we were sent home with painkillers. That was a month ago and it all semeed fine, he made a pretty good recovery although he still seemed a little off. Now, he's stopped eating again. He looks like he is eating as much as the other piggie, but when we weighed him, he'd dropped from 1100g to 900g, which is really scary. I've got him back on critical care today and he can easily. Get down well over 30ml a day as well as the hard food he's eating. I had a look at his teeth, and his lower teeth look fine, but one of his top teeth looks really heavily worn/chipped on one side and he's not biting down right.
I'm having the roughest few months of my life, my partner left me among other things, I have absolutely no money at all and I don't know how I'll afford another surgery. I'll sort him out and not make my rent if I have to, but does anyone have any advice/experience in this? Should I wait and see if it's a chipped tooth or am I putting him at risk?

I am sorry to hear that things have been difficult for you.
If he can’t eat due to his teeth, then he needs help from a cavy savvy vet.

Where are you located? There is a dental vet who is widely recommended on this site in Northampton (cat & rabbit clinic) who many people travel from all over the uk to see.

I'm based in Liverpool but already sold my car, so I can't get to Northampton.

Were any of the vets you tried ones on our vet locator in your area? Those vets are ones recommended by members as being cavy savvy. If they weren’t, then maybe you could try one of those?

Unfortunately it's not uncommon to need the teeth taking care of more than once but if done correctly, over time the visits become less frequent and eventually can stop. Please do look at our vets locator and call around as vets prices vary widely. It may also be worth asking if the vets would consider a payment plan to help you spread the cost over a couple of months if that makes it easier

Sorry for the delay in replying, been busy the last couple of days- Dr Clare Bertram at Penny Lane Vets4Pets did an amazing dental op on Blodwen who arrived with 6 overgrown molars and a misaligned jaw- all fixed in one surgery, she was eating like nothing had happened 3 days later, and almost a year later her teeth are still great!
