Yesterday, for my sisters birthday, my sisters and I all got guinea pigs. We placed the 3 of them, (all girls) into a pretty large guinea pig “house” and started the fuss over them. Obviously, they were afraid of us, being only 8 weeks old and in a new house, the only thing we could really do was look. They would hardly even move while we were around. At around 4:30 am, I got a call from my sister. Apparently, one of them had escaped. Luckily, I was awake anyway, but our parents weren’t, so I did the next best thing and tried to help myself. When I got there, I realised the dog had opened the cage somehow, and let her out. Of course it was my pig. After looking for a few minutes, we found her hiding under a desk, very scared. I didn’t want to pick her up, as I didn’t think she’d like it, so I tried luring her back into the cage’s entry point, it didn’t work. Eventually I just scooped her up, -I knew how to hold them from a friend- and stroked her for a bit, as it was all exciting to me and she wasn’t retaliating. After a minute or so, I put her back though. She ran as soon as she touched the ground, over to her sister. It all seemed fine, until today, when a couple of hours ago (6:30pm) I went to go have a look at them. My younger sister (9y/o) was fussing over them as per usual, but nothing out of the ordinary. Until I hear a kind of whimper. The same kind from last night when we got them. It was like a dogs whimper only on a guinea pig, and this time I knew something was off. My little girl was lying on her side, whimpering and sometimes shaking a bit (more of a jolt/shake). One of the others was nudging her too. I quickly reached in and pulled her out, as I thought she was scared of it (I searched it up) but she didn’t do anything to stop me. She just lay down on my lap while whimpering and still jolting. I was on call to a friend at the time, she told me I should lay her on my chest, so I did. I felt her body get cold, and thought maybe she was just cold.. she wasn’t. She tilted her head one more time before going limp, looking up at me with her small eyes. I actually didn’t realise she was gone though, so was lying down for another maybe 10 minutes. I suddenly noticed she hadn’t moved.. that’s when I realised. I tend to get attached to animals so easily, so I think you can understand I’m pretty heartbroken, but also confused. I’m not sure how it died? My mum seems to think it was a heart attack but I’m not sure. Anyway, thank you for reading. If you have any suggestions please comment.

- The picture is her a few minutes before death as a friend wanted to see. Not sure if it helps . Or maybe she is dead there.

I'm not sure why she died but i sure am sorry for your loss. I also got really attached to my piggys when i first got them (like the second i held them) but again I'm really sorry . This was a sad read.

I'm really sorry for your loss. Since she got loose and was in proximity to the dog at the time, it's possible that she was injured internally when no one was there to see it. Unfortunately there is likely no way to know for sure. ((HUGS)) and so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your response! I hope your piggy’s are doing well! I appreciate it

So sorry for your loss. :(
Thank you 🙏

Thanks ! It seems the only logical explanation I can find at the moment. Your kind words are uplifting :)

It sounds like she might have had some sort of fit or seizure unfortunately. These can happen out of the blue and in any age of piggy. She may also have suffered injury when free or from the dog. There is no sure way to know. I would make sure that the dog does not have access to the cage/the room the cage is in while no one is around
