We adopted a baby sow (we named her daisy) on Friday, she was living with her sister and mama but they turned on her hence why she is with us.

She is about three months old and still very jumpy and afraid.

I try to get her out in the evenings and sit with her in a blanket while watching tv, I did this today and she was eating kale and a carrot - completely fine.

After about 45 I go to get up and she's gone floppy and rolls onto her back and doesn't move... I can see her breathing but she is completely unresponsive.

After about ten seconds (felt like alot longer!) she's sitting up perfectly fine and fineshes her carrot.

If anybody has ever experienced thisor has any advice I would really appreciate it.

Is there any specific reason for her to have a seizure? Could she suffer with these throughout her life?

She seems absolutely fine now, as if it never happened.

Thank you for your response.

Can guineapigs deep sleep? I thought they didn't..and heard they slept with their eyes open sometimes..

Aside from AbiNurse's suggestion (a good one) I could only imagine she was in nod nod land and didnt rouse properly. Saying that, a guineapig who sleeps deeply might also not be well. In the wild it would be a bad idea to snooze through a raid!

I'd have a chat with your vet just to check out that she doesnt have any underlying issues :)

Maybe it was a minor stroke? My piggie Dylan (who recently passed away aged over 6 ) had a stroke in rescue before we adopted him. Other than a head tilt it never really seemed to affect him.

I'd take the advice of others on here and get her checked out at a guinea friendly vet.

There are loads of reason for seizures, to name a few:
- idiopathic (most common cause) which is unexplained
- electrolyte imbalances in the blood (chemical inbalance)
- epilepsy
- poisoning
- head trauma
- low glucose in the blood
- blood clots (usually cause a stroke rather than seizure)
- drug reactions

Best to chat to the vet, she may or may not suffer these episodes throughout her life. As others have suggested deep sleep could be the cause but the fact that she rolled onto her back and you were unable to rouse her, i wouldn't think so? Mini stoke is possible but more paralysis/one side effected i would have though would be seen.

Good luck.

x.

I no if you lay a bunny in there backs on your lap they go into like a trance... Not sure if this works with pigs though ? Seizure or stroke sounds more realistic see a vet xx
