guinea pig died very young one left

i bought 2 guinea pigs 10 days ago. all was well but one (pig) got very ill yesterday so i took him to the vets. tbh vet didnt seem to have a clue and gave him an antibiotic injection and an anti inflammatory injection and said come back tomorrow. today as I suspected pig had died through the night leaving Pog all on his own.

they are/were both males and are young. will pog be ok on his own or better to try and get a young companion.

I bought them from pets at home which I know have a reputation but I would just like to add that I called them up when Pig was ill, they told me to take him to the local vet and they would cover the costs. even though Pig has died they are covering the full vet fee and providing a free replacement or refund as well. to me this is excellent service. I know they are pets and not replaceable but given the situation I feel that is the most they can do. So would just like the put a thumbs up out there for P.A.H
 
Hi! I am very sorry about your loss; sadly that is not a rare occurrence.
P@h have always paid any vet cost if the illness/unplanned pregnancy could be traced back to their shop and have offered a replacement piggy, if wished. Unfortunately, they obviously haven't cleared up on the health front, which has caused all that bad press in the first place... :{

Did you know that we have a range of good guinea pig rescues in this country which offer to bond your bereaved piggy with a character compatible friend of his choice (the key to a stable boar bond)?
They only rehome piggies that have gone through a full quarantine/vet check and are a minimal weight/age to prevent them from falling ill so soon after rehoming. They will also give you support and advice throughout the settling in period and the whole life of their piggies.

so sorry for your loss, such a shame for a young pig.

Even though they have offered the standard customer sales policy I would be very tempted if it were me to recover the vet fees but look elsewhere for a friend as there is no guarantee the new pig wont suffer from the same illness.
 
PS: Vet cost and replacement piggy are simply good business sense - as a happy, satisfied customer, you will spend a multiple of that on bedding, food and toys in their shop during the 4-6 years that healthy guinea pigs live. And that is the area where p@h make their profits!
 
Yeah i know what you are saying but they didnt have to cover the vet fees as i couldnt prove it was an illness caused by them but they did no questions asked.
you are right about them making money elsewhere, but not from me though as i am a full fleece user and get my hay from my horses :)

took the refund for fees and guinea pig going to see how Pog manages on his own for a short while i think.

Guinea pigs are social animals and I am sure Pog will prefer to have a friend. There is no need to rush as I am sure you are both still grieving the loss of Pig but do be aware that some guinea pigs get depressed after loosing their friend and keep an eye on Pog.
 
yeah i will do.

feel really upset. especially as bought lots of wire cubes and was looking forward to watching them enjoy a C&C cage :(
 
I'm very sorry for your loss, so soon after you got them too which is very sad.
To be honest, damn right P@H should cover the cost, they are the ones supporting the horrendous conditions the animals they sell are brought up in, its the least they can do!
I wouldn't give them a thumbs up at all and neither would anyone who saw the conditions these animals are brought up in. So terribly sad.
 
My GP Daisy was very depressed when her friend died. I didn't realise how much getting a new piggy would perk her up but it was amazing :-) She was so happy when we bought Piglet home, it was love at first sight and they are just so happy together it is a joy to watch. They play together, share food and the thing I enjoy most are the warbles and squeaks between them (when she was alone Daisy was so quiet). I don't think any piggy likes being alone so please consider getting your piggy a friend.
 
yeah I think I know what you mean. Pog has been quiet. going to keep my eyes open for one in chesterfield/sheffield area, just dont fancy getting another from P@H
 
If you are in that area there is Cavy Corner Sanctuary in Doncaster. I am going there for my next piggy I think. It's a bit of a drive but good to know they have come from someone who wants the best for them. When my Tabitha was rescued by them she was one of 66 stacked in little cages in someones back room all the way to the ceiling, dirty, hungry, thirsty and covered in lice. She is such a cuddle monster I can't believe she came from that and still likes people.
 
thanks ill keep that in mind. moving in February and thats when I plan to build my C&C so if i can wait or should I say if Pog can wait ill wait until then.
