Hi,
I am new here and do not have any guinea pigs. I am looking after my friend's two male un-neutered ones for two and a half weeks. They arrived at my house two days ago.
They are indoor ones and fight, so have two separate big cages at either side of the room. Normally they are not in the same room.
Ollie is the classic, lovely guinea pig. He calmed down after a couple of hours at my house and is very sweet; always calling for breakfast and being very affectionate. As he is so relaxed, I can brush his long hair so it looks very silky.
Naruto, the other one, is a nervous wreck. I thought he was just settling in at first, but now I am worried about him. Ollie works him up with dominant calls and mild teeth chattering. Naruto replies with full scale teeth chatter that can be heard rooms away. He also makes this weird, dog-like noise - never the happy guinea-pig bubble.
Sometimes Naruto randomly bolts, smashes into the wall of his cage and back-flips back off repeatedly. It happens in the night when Ollie is asleep, so he couldn't be calling him aggressively or anything. Naruto also does it in the day too, so I am scared to unsettle him. He eats well, but won't move from the same sitting spot in his cage. He won't go into his house to sleep or drink any water. He won't even get his cucumber if it's out of reach. Naruto hasn't slept for about 2 days so has terribly watery eyes. Plus, Naruto has incredibly long hair and nails, and his hair is so tangled and I can't touch him without him going into a fit. I am always sure to not approach him from above or so I sound like a predator hiding in the bushes.
I thought Naruto might want to come out of his cage, so I opened it. He jumped out and ran under the bed, and made horrific teeth noises. With him being so aggressive, I sadly had to corner the poor animal and bundle him in a box to get him back again.
I don't know what to do, or whether I should cover the cage to settle him. The way he looks, I am terrified he will have a heart attack. Naruto was happy with my friend (his owner) so is not in pain or ill.
Is Ollie being aggressive towards him and making him scared? They never used to be in the same room.
I would welcome any suggestions!
Thanks
