Hi, my Guinea Pig is having trouble eating and we think it's because of his teeth being too long. I have gave him small pieces of lettuce and he really wants to eat them and they can't get past his teeth. I am scared that he is going to lose weight. We are going to the vets today to get his teeth filed down but I have heard stories where a vet has filed them down too short so I really hope the vet can help. In the meantime I need some advice on what to feed him. I heard grating food helps and softening the pellets with water. If you have had this problem with your guinea pig then please share your tips. Thank you

Thank you! And yes we give him things to chew on like cardboard rolls and stuff. I am going to the vets today and I think they are a good vet so I hope Brownie (My guinea pig) gets better. After he has had the filing done it may hurt him to eat for a while so I think we are going to try hand feeding. Thanks for the help it has made me feel less nervous about it all. :)

Paws crossed.

Thanks. I will post on here after the operation to keep you updated.

Welcome to the forum :) Whereabouts are you based? If you are in the UK there is a vet locator at the top of the page of recommended vets. If you live near Northampton I would suggest you take him to Simon at the Cat & Rabbit clinic as he is probably the best vet for dental issues :)

Hi! I am sat with Brownie and his brother Nibbles who is cheering him up. I put water on a bowl of pellets and mixed them up. It has made a brown sludge that he can eat. But Nibbles is eating it all! Brownie has ate a little bit of the pellet mix and has had a little drink of water. I want to handfeed him but don't have a syringe to do that so when we go to the vets I'm gonna ask for one .

If you are anywhere within reach of Simon Maddock at the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic in northampton, please take him there, even if it is a major trip; he is probably the best dental vet in the whole country. If necessary, @furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary can board your piggy in her sanctuary for dental piggies for the time being. Many vets are not familiar with dental problems and can easily make things worse, so it is vital that you find an experienced one.

Until then, please hand feed your piggy; you will also have to do so for sometime until the teeth are growing back properly (it may need one or more after-treatments until they do so).

PS: You can buy 1ml syringes at your pharmacy. it is very important that you keep the guts going.

The vet we are going to knows what the problem is and knows what to do but thanks anyway :) We will get a syringe for him

I would get more than 1 syringe if you can as they can have a habit of jamming, plus you will also need a syringe for fluids.

He has been to the vets and the vet says he has an Abscess in his mouth which is why he won't eat because it hurts him to eat. The vet said he is hydrated and weighing 1kg at the moment. The vet gave him two injections to stop the pain in the abscess and we are going back on monday so the vet can see his progress. He gave us two syringes, a food mix that he can eat and antibiotics which he has to take twice a day. Hopefully Brownie will recover quickly as he isn't being himself at the moment. We took him to the vets with his brother he accompanied him there. Brownie is now resting from the traumatic experience of the injection.

Yes they are :( Hopefully the anti-inflammatory has kicked in.

Poor boy, is the injection supposed to last the weekend? Do you know what antibiotics you have been given?

Please could you confirm your location, if you are minor just confirm the country.

I'm in England Lancashire. We have medicine to give him twice a day and special food that he can eat with a syringe. He has been given anti-inflammatory to stop the pain from the abscess in the injection and the medicine is called Baytril.
