Hello!

i’m new to the forum but am posting to enquire if anyone has encountered this before?
My guinea pig pepper’s pupil look kind of cloudy? There’s some white in his pupil. Is it a cataract or an eye infection?
it doesn’t seem to bother him but i’m worried it might be serious.

Please have your piggy seen by a vet. The cloudiness can often be ulceration caused by an injury (haypoke). He will need to be checked and if it is ulceration, painkillers and antibiotic eye drops should be prescribed.
Eyes can deteriorate quickly, so please have your piggy seen today if possible but within 24 hours

Hi!

It needs a hands-on vet examination to make sure that this is a cataract, nuclear sclerosis (similar to a cataract but the clouding over of the lens is more even) or whether it is an infection in the front chamber of the eye that is not ulcerating on the surface. The last option is the rarest but the one that needs prompt treatment.
Cataracts and nuclear sclerosis can sometimes come up very quickly while at other times they develop very gradually.

I would strongly recommend that you call your vet, send these pictures to them and see what they say and whether you should bring your piggy in for an examination or not.

I have had my piggy Hazel at the vet today for exactly the same problem, her eye had become cloudy overnight. She has scratched her eye and it is infected, she has antibiotic eye drops and pain relief for 5 days.

So please take your piggy to the vet, it could save her sight.

hello,

thank you for your replies. I posted this on another page and some of them told me it was osseous metaplasia, though it looks like hay poke initially. I went to research about it and it does look the part. Other guinea pig parents have also told me about their experience with pigs with osseous metaplasia, seems like there’s nothing the vet can do and it will get worse with time but doesn’t cause them pain.

I am picking up my other pig from the vet today due to bloat issued ( he still hasn’t pooped for 3 days ) but i will continue to monitor him at home as he is rather timid and scared at the vet alone. I will show the vet the pictures and probably bring him for a checkup in a few days if it gets worse.
