My male guinea pig(1yearold), Umi, has one of his eyes squinted. His eye seems like it is tinted blue and has a cloudy cover over it. There also is some white "goo" in his eye. He seems like he could be in some pain. I don't know if he got poked by a piece of hay or if it was his cagemate but what can I do to help him? I hate seeing him like this and i could use any help asap. Here is the best picture I could get.

It looks like it could be a hay poke or other eye injury... it will need a vet visit to assess damage and prescribe antibiotics/pain relief. Have you got a vet in your area that you can contact to be seen as soon as possible?

Yes I have a vet near. I will try to get over there asap. Thank you!

Good luck at the vet @LaurenKaye . Let us know how it goes.

Eye issues can escalate quickly so it's always worth going as soon as you can.

One of my boys had a piece of hay in his eye once. I managed to get it out and his eye looked fine. But as it was his eye we went to the vet anyway. They used a stain solution on his eye and he had an ulcer on it and needed antibiotics. It looked fine so I'm really glad I went

When my Christian was only 5 days old he had hay poke and I took him to the vets and he was given antibiotics and pain killers twice a day. One time I forgot to massage one of the drops in. (Which I had to do as his eye was so small the drop covered it). I put him back in the cage with Mum and he immediately walked over to her stood in front of her and squeaked. The next thing I saw was Mum licking the drop off his eye! It was really cute!

I hope that you have been able to have your boy seen by now.

Eye injuries deteriorate very quickly and the damage can be larger than you can see with your naked eye. That is why a prompt vet trip is so important.
The sooner you can step in with the prescribed medication, the quicker they tend to heal. The blueish gunk sitting on the eye surface is in fact an eye ulcer sitting on the injured spot and then spreading across the eye. This can happen in a matter of hours.

If you have trouble getting the drops or gel into a very sore eye, try to sit your piggy on your lap, facing away from you. place a bowl or plate of its favourite veg, fresh grass or treat in front of it and let it tuck in. Once it is fully absorbed in eating, it is much easier to sneak in the gel from behind. You may still need a few tries, but not quite as many. Guinea pigs don't multitask!

What can additionally help and is often prescribed now by vets are visco tears (artificial tears) to help with the lubrication and the discomfort. You give them half an hour after the antibiotic eye drops or gel. Generally, visco tear gel is more effective as it works for longer. You can get visco tears in any pharmacy. Just say they are for yourself (dry eyes).

All the best!

Thank you everyone for the help! I'm sorry I haven't had time to reply.

I got Umi to a vet asap and the vet took care of him. There was a piece of hay stuck in his eye and the vet took it out. I watched his eye then over the weekend to make sure that it would heal properly and there was no surface damage. His eye went back to 100% normal after a few days and he has been doing great sense.

Thank you so much everyone!

Good news. Very pleased to hear that Umi has recovered well. And well done for taking such good care of him.:)
