Hi, I came outside to look at my guinea pigs this morning and noticed that one of them had a whitey yellowy puss type thing weeping from it's eye. The other eye is perfectly fine but it now cannot really open the sore eye. It is a 4 month old female. Can anyone help me?

hi I'm not an expert but i had the same thing with one of my pigs who is 4 month old. i took him to the vets the day after i noticed it. personally i would take to the vets, mine had an eye infection.

Sorry to hear she's got a sore eye. Did the discharge look quite thick like proper pus, or did it look more like a watery, whitish, milky fluid?

First thing I would consider is a hay poke which has led to a sore, weepy eye. Treatment tends to be antibiotic eye drops/ointment to help prevent infection; this can be done at home but I would recommend seeing a vet for a proper diagnosis and suitable treatment.

For now, try to flush the eye using cooled boiled water or sterile saline. Use a small needleless syringe or even a cotton pad, and gently drip the water in the upper corner of the eye and let it flush the surface of the eye for a few seconds.

Evening all, my 4 Guineas came down with a eye infection, i took one to the verts and was prescribed Ciloxan eye drops and Metacam orally for the infection....lets hope that it sorts them all out. It breaks my heart seing them like that bless them! Dont know if this will help but theirs had puss and the third eye was inflamed, so sore looking! Vet was great, but for £47 i should think so! Will update you as to how mine get on

Thanks for all the help guys, it's really helpful. I will try to take her to the vets
but I took another guinea pig to the vet a couple of weeks ago about a sore leg and it cost £150 in total for the medicine and for the vet to see her!

what strength metacam did * use and how much/how often? my vet is useless and my pig with fungus on his nose now has a poorly eye too :(

My sow had an eye infection, and a previous sow I owned got an absolutely enormous piece of hay stuck right in the corner of her eye, which I had to remove with tweezers. I was recommended to use cold tea (no milk, obvs :))) and just gently drip it over the eye a few times a day. It worked really well for both of them, so you could try that :)

I have no idea tbh :) it was recommended to me by another piggie owner, apparently it really soothes the eye and reduces inflammation.
