Hi I am a complete newbie here. Okay so this actually happened two nights ago. My sons guinea pig jumped when he tried to pick him up and he fell down the back of the sofa. Picked him up and he didn’t have any obvious injury. He has been keeping an eye on him since and his behaviour or movement haven’t changed so nothing obvious. I’m just really looking for advice on what I should be aware of. We are new to the world of guinea pigs with my son getting Grover and Felix a couple of weeks ago, it was Grover who jumped. Any advice welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Personally I would pop along to the vets for a check over. They can check all the joints as well as listen to heart rate and breathing to try and check for any possible internal injuries. They would also be best placed to tell you what to look out for in the coming days as a sign that something is wrong. They may, or may not, prescribe some short term pain relief on the safe side

A vet check would be best. Guinea pigs can hide their injuries and illnesses very well, so it may not be immediately obvious if there are any issues.

Okay, I will phone the local vet for an appointment then and see what they say. Thanks for the advice 😊 I will update with what they say.

Welcome to the forum.
Let us know how the vet check goes.
Hope fully it will just be reassurance that everything is ok

Welcome! A vet check is definitely the best option, guinea pigs hide their injuries very well as a natural reaction to not wanting to attract the attention of predators. We adopted a piggy last year who had an untreated broken leg, she hid it so well her previous owner never noticed, so better to be on the safe side!

Hopefully your piggy will be fine, but get them checked out. Piggies are more safely handled by picking them up in a fleece sack or similar. You can train them to hop into the sack, then you pick them up securely. Children must be trained how to handle piggies (or any animals) safely. Your vets or local rescue centre can advise if you are not sure

A vet check would be best. A few years ago one of my guinea pigs took a tumble while he was being baby sat (I was away overnight at the time), and all four of his front teeth fell out. The person caring for him took him to to vets, and aside from needing some painkillers and antibiotics (to prevent infection), he was fine, and had no other injuries. It's definitely worth getting them checked by a vet. Piggies can be very fragile.

Hi everyone! Thank you for all the replies. We had an appointment today and decided to get both Felix and Grover checked over while we were there just to make sure there were no issues. Both got top marks and appear to be happy and healthy so we are delighted with that. The vet has said if we have any queries about anything we can even just give them a call so that’s reassuring. Seems like we are doing all the right things too which is good as we want happy boys 😊

Just notice this.100% Well done for asking and then acting on advise.
I'm so pls piggie and piggies are ok. ?
Well done again.

Wow, what a shock for you. Well done for getting them checked out at the vets.

I completely understand this. My boy Finn is also very fidgety and jumpy.
I would recommend a tunnel similar to this one. I use it while cutting his bum hair and to transport him. He will go inside this tunnel and stay calm.
