Hiya i have a guinea pig callled Fudge , since july he’s been non stop ill- with respiratory infection
i took him to vets and they prescribed antibiotics and then his infection went, but i kept going back due to his breathing isn’t good he’s had this for ages now always having problems with breathing
so since september i’ve non stopped being at vets
he’s been on metacam , Metoctop which isn’t antibiotic , is pain relief, i thought he was getting better but he’s got worst , his breathing seems slower like sounds like thumping he doesn’t want to run around and popcorn anymore with my other male guinea pig there both brothers , he hasn’t wanted to do anything for a while
he doesn’t want to drink or eat his pallets he’ll eat veggies and some grass and hay but he is also dust sensitive to hay , the metacam and metoctop is from where he ate a bit of plastic like a straw plastic wrapper only a tiny bit i didn’t realise he did until i seen he wasn’t be active that was to get his gut moving he’s pooing and weeing fine now
poos are still very small though
i went to a emergency vet last night and then said they don’t like the look of his breathing and could be pneumonia which i’m very worried about
this has been happening for months so i don’t know why the vets haven’t told me he’s got pneumonia only a emergency one did
everytime i went they said he was fine which i knew he was never right
he was oxygen last night but they took him off as said he’ll be fine to wait so waited 1 hour and 30 minutes to be seen , he has also lost weight he was 0.90 then went up to 0.99 then went vets month later in november and was 0.84 and went emergency vet last night he’s now 0.76
he’s been eating loads of hay and veggies i did stop hay for a bit because they told me to due to him being dust sensitive , i just feel like they have never told me the actual truth of what wrong with him, he won’t move off me he won’t run around he won’t do anything he’ll only eat hay he doesn’t wanna drink , he keeps grinding his teeth anyone reason why that could be ?
is there anyway for him to recover pneumonia if that’s definitely what he got
can i get a nebulizer to help too? with breathing
what would i need for it
emergency vet said nebulizer would be good
he just doesn’t seem right and he’s only 11 months old , just very stressed and upset at the moment Fudge’s respiratory infection started from being on woodshavings in his hutch in the shed outside there was insulation or anything but he’s been inside for 1 month or 2 now to be kept warm i’m just really worried how he’s gotten this ill i’ve done everything i can for this poor little boy, my other guinea pig brownie is perfectly fine
any chance anyone can help me please
sorry for long paragraph
he just seems out of it and don’t seem happy and he’s just been on loads of antibiotics since 😢

Aw poor Fudge, I'm sorry he's so poorly 😢 Grinding his teeth could be a sign of pain.
We bought a nebuliser from Amazon to use for our rats. We've since used it for budgies and piggies too.
A plastic storage box to sit in, with the lid placed at a slight angle (to allow a bit of air flow) on the top whilst nebulising works well. Make sure to place a towel on the bottom for grip. We've also used a carrier with success.
We've used f10 to nebulize, but some antibiotics can also be nebuliser. Best to check with your vet what they would recommend!
What antibiotics have you tried so far? Azithromycin (aka Zithromax) is commonly used for respiratory infections where baytril isn't sufficient.
I would also encourage him to keep eating hay. A good quality hay should only have minimal dust levels. Either that or tons of grass to avoid his teeth growing too long. I would also consider starting to syringe feed him with something like critical care or emeraid, he needs to be kept hydrated.
I really hope you can get to the bottom of what's wrong with Fudge! 🤞❤️

thankyou so much! i’ll try nebulizer to see if this helps, yes it’s been going on for a long time it’s really sad 😢, i will try my hardest for him as always just reallly worried at the moment xx

It's so hard when they're poorly, especially at Christmas! 😔
We've had the odd piggy at the rescue with odd respiratory symptoms. Some have been allergies, some infections, some have been damage to the lungs by previous owners.
Have you considered an xray? It could help pinpoint anything physical in the lungs.

I’ve tried metacam
the vet kept putting me on that
i’m now on Trimoxazole
i think he’s had this one before

no i haven’t tried a X-RAY i dont know how much id be looking at that , do u know a price on how much that could be ? x

It really depends on your vet, last time we have a piggy xrayed at our vet it was around £80, I've had my house rabbit xrayed previously at a different vet for around £75, sometimes there is a charge on the top for the vet to interpret the results. Worth checking with your vet though!

ok thankyou so much
if have any more problems will definitely come back
he’s eating hay now , and i’m going to make some veggies for him, with cucumber as getting water into his body
thankyou again 🤍

So sorry you’re dealing with this.
It’s obvious you love Fudge very much and are doing everything possible for him.
Holding you in my thoughts and hoping for a speedy recovery
