I was brushing my guinea pig yesterday and found a knot in his hair. When I pulled out the hair it was a small clump of hair with the skin still attached. I then checked both my piggies to see whether they had any bald patches but couldn't see anything. I don't know if this is a fungal infection or whether its from biting each other. Any ideas?

hair can also come out if there are mites present too, are there any lesions through scratching and does the skin have small raised spots on? I am having problems at the mo with a couple of my guineas, they are being treated at the vets with Ivermectin, the vets seem to think it is mites. To be on the safe side I would get a vet to look your guinea over, to see if they can diagnose the problem, as fungal and mite infestations look very similar, to an untrained eye.

There are no marks and I haven't noticed much scratching going on. My old guinea pig had mites so know the signs and there haven't been anything. They are due for their first vets visit so will get them checked out. I don't know whether its happened because they have been nipping at each other and there has been some hair tugging going on

well been to the vets today and one of my piggies has mites but the vet seems to think we have caught it quickly. Getting injection treatment now. thanks for all the advice
