I was mosying around the local garden centre looking for veggie seeds when I saw a picture of a Guinea pig on a packet of seeds... Hmmm I thought grow your own guinea pig... But then realised its a seed mix of the foods that guinea pigs eat in the wild. So of course I bought done and will sow them today but wondered have any of you tried this and did they like it?

If any of you are interested I can get the brand Name for you bug it's an Italian seed compAny, they sell lots of seeds for flowers and veggies too

sounds epic! Pls do!

I grow my guys timmothy grass from 'the hay experts'. A small little bag of grass seeds spreads to about 4 or 5 plant pots ROUGHLY (dependig on how you sow) and the guineas go wild for it. When Leeland was ill I used to plonk her on her very own plant pot and she would spend a good 15 minutes spinning little guineapig crop circles until everything was mowed down. Then a couple of weeks later I would put her on another and give the first one time to catch up again. It slows down after a bit but I didn't put fertiliser on the soil because I didnt know if it was a good idea to pour it ontop of the grass she was going to eat. Thinking about it, I should have made one out of GP poop!

I'd be interested to know what seeds it contained, is there a species list on the packet? I've grown trays of grass for my pigs and they completely destroyed them very quickly. :))

I've also grown herbs and I collect wild grasses and other plants for them too (I live in a very rural area and my mum has a field/wood which helps, I'm planning on taking them there in summer as we sometimes camp out at weekends).

Okay the brand is piccolo amici and its just got a picture of a guinea pig on the front with cavia.

The seeds are miscuglio valda 50% , cavort Copenhagen 15% trifoliate bianco 10% and cicoria 5% and spinach of 20% I need too translate the names.

The shelled warriors site is great - I buy my tortoise seeds through them, cannot fault their service.

I'm not sure about the contents of the "rabbit seed mix", as rabbits can eat a lot of things that GPs can't as they have a higher tolerance to things (generally speaking) so that would need some more research!

The first is a mixture of something (presumably grasses but valda doesn't translate), the second I have no idea and the last three are white clover, chicory and spinach. You'll have to see what comes up! I know clover and spinach are high calcium so it's probably best as an occasional treat.

Also to add, that eBay rabbit mix contains various plants that could potentially be considered toxic but it would depend on things like quantity so whether they're actually toxic to pigs or not I'm not sure. I'd be surprised that the seller would market it as a rabbit and guinea pig mix if there was a likelihood of poisoning.

Hi thanks Hermes, yes won't give too much of that then... Why sell it if its too high... Grrrrrrr

I found this on a previous thread:

Miscuglio valda - hodgepodge valda
Spinacio - Spinach
Cavolo Copenhague - cabbage Copenhague
Trifoglio bianco - White Clover
cicoria - chicory

I've bought seeds from Shelled Warriors too. Just got to sow some now. :)

Thank you countrylass, what is hodgepodge! Lol

A hodgepodge is a mixture, it's just an alternative translation of the word miscuglio, I still have no idea what 'valda' is though, I'm still guessing it'll be a grass seed mixture. And it makes a lot more sense that it's 'cavolo' rather than 'cavort'! :)
