Hello, I have two guinea pigs but unfortunately one of them has died tonight.

They are at least six years old which is fairly old but i'm aware they can live up to ten. So i'm a little shocked. They're sisters and they've never been apart for more than a few minutes (even then they'd be within the same area so they could talk to eachother).

I don't know how to support my remaining guinea pig and i'm not keen on trying to introduce a new guinea pig to her. I'm a university student and I live away from home. My parents look after them while i'm away.

I thought about maybe slowly skipping out the enclosure so the scent of her sister doesn't disappear suddenly.

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry for your loss. The average life span is about 4-7 years, so your girl has had a good length of life. uinea Guinea pigs can live longer, but that is not quite as often. The oldest known guinea pig has lived to the amazing age of 17!

Could you please tell us the area where you are studying or where your parents are living. A guinea pig should ideally have company, whatever the age, even if it is just in an adjoining cage. You notice what a difference it makes if they suddenly come alive again when in company. We may be able to help you better finding a solution if we have an idea where you are located.

I go to Northampton university so i'm only 30 min journey away from home but I live in recidence at uni

So sorry to hear that :( I believe that's a good age, but i'm sure it's never easy to deal with no matter how old they are.

Hi! It may be an idea to get in contact with Honeybunnies to talk about whether it would be possible to find a solution for companionship for the remainder of her life with their help; whether that is at your parents' home or at the rescue. They are your closest good rescue where you would be in very safe and experienced hands; they are located near Fosse Park by Leicester just off the M1, so again only about half an hour's drive from you.

Alternatively or additionally you might get into contact with the lady that runs Rabbit&Guinea Pig Boarding in Rugby. She used to run a rescue, but has closed down that side; but she may have perhaps some local knowledge that can help you. Rabbit & Guinea Pig Boarding & Bonding | Facebook

Unfortunately, I have just taken in a friend's 8 year old remaining piggy to have company after the death of my Tanni, so I am full up again. I am not far from you just one train stop further on in Coventry, but my specialist vet is in Northampton, so I know the journey well!

Next day now. I've brought my remaining guinea pig Ramona a tunnel so she has multiple places to hide. I don't want her to be afraid to go to the hay rack or water bottle. Strangely she appears more sociable. I've seen her drinking and eating which is good. I'm going back to university today so I've told my parents how much to feed her and to keep an eye on how much food and water she consumes.

I am so very sorry for your loss, it is so distressing to lose a piggy so suddenly. Love to Ramona and hugs to you

Sleep well little one

RIP little piggy
