I regularly look after my friends guinea pigs whilst she’s on holiday but the day before she gave them to me Amber ( the piggy) has a very sore patch with red spots with hair missing ( looks like blood ) and I’m not entirely sure what it is ? I don’t think it was her buddy as she is still very small. I am currently using a oil made from the piggy potions book but I don’t think it’s doing much. Vet time ?

Hi!

Poor girl! that looks very sore and sadly rather advanced. :(

Please see your vet for mange mites (trixacarus caviae); the burrow their eggs in the very painful and inflamed skin. It could also be a fungal infection (ringworm) but as you have treated on spec, it is unfortunately impossible to tell.
Both issues are highly contagious and not at all uncommon in new guinea pigs. Your piggies will both need to be treated with good quality products and not the cheap low dosed broad spectrum stuff from a pet shop that can temporarily suppress symptoms but not heal.

You may have to fashion a bandage or use an old sock to prevent your girl biting open the mange mite sores again to prevent her from fitting, which can damage the heart. Please also ask your vet for a mild disinfectant to prevent the sores from festering.

You can find more information in this link here: What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)

Thanks for your response, Oh my that’s not good news , do you think it might be from the new piggy ?

It could be, but as Wiebke has already said becasue you have been applying oil to the area aready this makes it harder to say what the problem is. At the end of the day only a vet will really know.

But if it is mange mites then all piggies have them all the time, but when they are stressed or run down they can multiply and then they cause problems.
Please take them to a vet becasue mange mites are really painful, but thankfully quickly and easily treated.
