Our guinea pig Cupcake is about 1 year old, and I have just heard her making a strange sound. I have read about a hooting noise being a possible sign of a heat condition, so I asked my husband how he would describe the noise ( I didn't mention the word "hooting" to him, as I didn't want to put words into his head, but that was how he described it).

I heard a similar noise a couple of days ago. I've had a look at the lists of symptons for heart problems, and I don't think Cupcake has any others, but I'm going to be watching carefully. She's very keen for her food, and I think reasonably active, but of course this hot weather has made them all seem a bit tired.

Is there anything else other than heart issues that might cause them to make a hooting noise? Is it possible it might not mean anything sinister?

I think I should take Cupcake for a check-up, but do I need to rush to do this? How soon should I get her to the vet?

We do have a good practice to go to, but I need to make sure we see one of the more cavy savvy vets there.

Hi, that may have been my list you saw as have posted it a lot recently. It can be a sign of heart issue yes and is often followed by a cough if that is the case. It can also be caused by the weather or environment though. What is she bedded on?

If it carries on then yes it will need checking out but for today if her breathing is not laboured then you don't need to panic. I will message you with an idea I have.

Thanks so much for your reply! Yes, I think it probably was your list I read. I don't think Cupcake has done any coughing, she certainly didn't when she had the hooting episode. They are bedded on Fitch, also with hay, which is very good quality hay, and not dusty.

I wonder whether it could have been the weather that caused the hooting noise? It has been very humid. I have not heard her do this before the weather got hot and sticky.

I don't think her breathing is any different, but I'll be watching her carefully for any problems, and any reoccurrence of the hooting. Even if she doesn't do it again, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to take her for a check up anyway, maybe towards the middle or end of the week. (Our car is booked in at the garage on Tuesday).

Thanks again for your reply, it was reassuring! I'll reply to your message in a minute.

Bumble has hooted a couple of times in the past but both my vet and myself think he passed a small stone.
