I don’t know if my guinea pig has a broken leg or foot. My guinea pig has not been putting pressure on her foot and her leg is swollen. When I touch it she doesn’t squeak. I don’t know if I need to take her to the vet or not. I’m scared they will amputate her leg. I don’t think I have enough money for a vet visit. I do the best I can to take care of them. I came on this web sight for your help. Please help me find out what is wrong with her.

I'm afraid there is no other option but to see a vet. We cant unfortunately diagnose what's wrong as we arent vets.

Hi!

Please see a vet as soon as possible. Your piggy is in great pain and needs an assessment and painkillers. Please never let your unrealistic fears get in the way of putting your piggy's welfare first and foremost. You are only making the problem worse the longer you hesitate.

Your brain jumping straight to the worst scenario it can come up with is a much greater problem than most illnesses turn out to be. If you suffer from anxiety and panic attacks, please take a very deep breath, concentrate on what needs doing and ask a family member or friend for practical support if you really struggle with yourself.

An amputation will only be considered in a case of an infection in the bone that does not respond to medicationor the leg having healed at a very awkward angle that impedes mobility, so it is VERY unlikely; especially with prompt treatment.

Unfortunately we cannot tell you what is wrong with the leg; only a vet's hands-on examination and an x-ray can do that - and provide the necessary medication. If you are unlucky it is a break; if you are lucky it is just a bad sprain. But we can't tell you that.
