Hello all, I am new here. We are currently DIY-ing an indoor hutch for our first guinea pigs. I've taken ideas from on here and elsewhere on the internet, however as it is taking shape I have become bit worried about the height of the front of the hutch.

I took inspiration from a hutch design on here by Milou in this thread Member Gallery: C&C cages/homemade cages , although as ours is a little deeper we have been able to put in a 'loft' level that runs all the way across the back. Like the one by Milou, our hutch is solid wood to 3 sides and pelxiglass to the front. Size is 150cm x 78cm. The front is 4mm plexiglass, which currently is planned to sit 25cm (10 inches) high. I aready have the plexiglass but it is not yet fitted.

I have now been told by guinea pig owners that 10 inches is way too low for them to be safe, and that the front/sides of the hutch need to be considerably higher. The hutch will sit on a table so it's important that they can't get out. I don't have the guinea pigs yet, so we don't know if they are climbers or not (we are re-homing a pair from a friend of a friend, who is too busy to give them much attention, and all I know about them is that they are 1 year old females).

I can make the front of the hutch a little higher by boxing the plexiglass into wooden batons (instead of just slotting it in) but I can't do much more than that without starting again, which we don't have the wood for. What are peoples thoughts? I don't have pictures but could probably take some if it would help.

Thanks!

Actually, having just re measured, because the plexiglass sits on a wooden baton, it is almost 11 inches high. So a bit better than I had remembered, but any reassurance/advice would be much appreciated!

Not too sure if that would be high enough, it probably will be as long as you don’t get a jumper or climber! The plexiglass is very smooth so there’s nothing really for piggies to get a purchase on. Make sure you don’t ever put any houses, boxes or tunnels near the glass as they could then be able to use them to climb on and launch themselves. Would love to see photos when you’ve finished x
