Hello all,

My piggy Juniper has started making little sounds whenever she poops, like she is in discomfort. We had this before about a month ago after she was on Baytril and Doxycycline, and it stopped.

Her poos are a little smelly, and darker in colour. Some are also a bit soft, not runny.
I gave her some recovery food which she absolutely demolished, shes drinking plenty, active and still eating.

Her belly felt a little bloated, but I can hear gut sounds going on.
I'm starting to wonder if she has a sensitive belly to certain veg, as last night she had some spring greens which are cruciferous veggies alongside some romaine lettuce, bell pepper and red chicory.

I dont feel too worried at this moment, and my plan is to take off veggies for 48 hours (used the digestive upset page), and supplement with probiotics and recovery food as her weight was 20 grams under her usual.

Any advice would be very appreciated, if she declines we will rush to the vets.

In sorry to hear this

You are planning to do everything we would suggest - dark and soft poops do indicate too much veg.

20g weight drop isn’t of concern (anything up to 50g is just normal fluctuation) but given the poops, it’s a good idea to increase her fibre intake and make sure you weigh her daily so you can monitor

Keep her off veg for as long as necessary for poops to normalise.
When it comes time to reintroduce veg, please only reintroduce one sprig of a herb - they’re milder on digestion - rather than any other type of veg.

If she doesn’t get better after a couple of days off veg, then do see a vet

I hope she is ok

Good luck. I hope she’s ok. Sending healing vibes ❤️

Thank you for your replies. Shes still the same today, her weight has stayed around the same as well.
She hasn't had salad for about 36 hours so far, and has been very angry about it. Still demolishing hay and recovery food, and still seems bright and happy.

She is still in discomfort when she poos, they are less soft and normalin shape, but dark in colour. I think she might just be a bit sore, my current thinking is that something irritated/inflamed her belly or bowels, and thats where the pain/discomfort is coming from. It hasn't affected her appetite at all which is a relief.
My little IBS girlie.

Can this be a common occurrence after strong antibiotics? Ive not seen this in my other pigs, and they havent been on antibiotics like baytril or doxycycline.
Juniper was a wreck when taking them, had to hand feed because she refused to eat, and then developed the painful poos.

My piggy Polo is on Baytril and his poops have become like clay and smelly. I've been giving him Fibreplex and Pro C (probiotics) by syringe and I gave him some poop soup last night. The probiotics should be given two hours before or after medications if your piggy is still on them. It's still too early to see ifvthey are making a difference, but I am hoping they will 🙏

Polo's poops seem to be less smelly ❤

Aw bless, I hope they recover quickly. Juniper was on the antibiotics in January, but her belly has been sensitive since then.
