Hi there,

Having been the proud owner of 2 gps for a couple of days, I've been looking into pet insurance and didn't expect it to be so hard! Once you get below rabbits in the size stakes, the major insurers I am used to checking don't seem interested!

I've found exoticpets (thru petplan) who will cover guinea pigs (approx £16 for 2 gps per month).

Can anyone recommend any other insurers for quotes?

Many thanks,

Jude

Hello welcome to the world of a guinea pig slave. I hope your piggies are settling in well.
Sadly it's not easy to get insurance as they are classed as exotic animals. A lot of people, myself included, put some money aside each month. I looked into insurance but with 9 pigs it's not worth it especially as they only pay out over a certain amount, I forget what that is but I've only had a few bills for major things (ops) that I would have been able to claim for. Everything else has been cheaper but more frequent trips.

Just to add, find out how much your vet charges for a consult and then look if there's an excess on the insurance as well.

We decided against insurance for guineas. You may be better putting that money into a savings account each month as a vet fund.

Some members do have insurance hopefully they will be able to advise more.

Thanks for that, just thought I must be missing something! Yes a monthly savings plan is also a good idea as vet trips aren't cheap.

Normally insurers are only too pleased to take your money ;)
