My three month old guinea pig has been diagnosed with lice, which we can see over his back he has been given one dose of xeno450 by the vet, we have cleaned out his hutch and strayed lice repellent and started again with new bedding and hay he is still crawling with lice need to know how long the treatment takes to work and do we need to clean his hutch out completely every day is there anything else we can do/use quite worried as we are new to this and should we keep him out of the way of our worried 4 year old any help would be appreciated thanks

Hi!

Gorgeous guineas' lice'n'easy shampoo will also help; it is very effective. Please be aware that you have to wait at least 48 hours either way between applying topical ivermectin and baths. Chrissy from Gorgeous Guineas will also answer any questions you may have for the use of her shampoo.

The good news for your little boy is that parasites are species specific, so he's not going to pick them up; any lice will starve to death on him! ;)

Give the hutch a complete and thorough disinfect scrub at the end of the treatment so there won't be a problem with any re-infestation from any eggs in a cranny.

PS: It would be great if you considered getting a companion for your little boy in the long term; guinea pigs are not wired to live on their own. We can provide you with a list of good standard rescues that will help bond your boy with a healthy character compatible companion at minimal risk to yourself.
