One of my poor piggies has what looks like a scab on his upper lip. It is black and sticks out from his face.

He is still eating fine and drinks well. I bought daktarin today to see if that helps but wanted to see if anyone had any other advice before I start giving my piggie the cream.

Thanks!

do you have a picture of it? Best to leave the cream until you know what it is. If its fungal, its best to let the vet fully examine him and prescribe appropriate treatment, whether that is antifungal or an antibiotic or a two-pronged approach. Self treating can make things difficult for a vet to diagnose.

Does he have any other sores/bald patches? Is he itchy? Is there a chance theres been a scuffle with another cage mate?x

Can you post a picture? It could be cheilitis, lip infection, which is usually caused by too much fruit/tomato acid in the diet. It depends on whether fungal, bacteria or microbes get into the tiny cracks in the lips. Please see a vet if that is the case and stop feeing fuit and tomatos for the time being and only in very reduced form no more than twice in a week afterwards.

Alternatively, if the scab is right next to the lips, it could be the beginning of fungal/ringworm. Just daktarin cream won't be enough if it is ringworm. We do not recommend home treating on spec, as it can do more damage than good.
