Guinea Pig Lost His Friend :(

We lost one of our piggies last night, I had 2 males and now I'm left with one, I don't really know what to do with the piggie that's still alive, he's on his own and I don't know what to do next really. The guinea pig died through basically chocking on a bit of plastic ( so it's not an illness and obviously was my fault because I wasn't careful enough, but putting that aside) the guinea pig I'm left with is slightly tame but not fully, he's only young and I really want to get him another companion, the best way I have thought of so far is getting him neutered and getting him one/some lady friends. I know the risks of neutering etc but honestly believe this is the best way he can be fully happy with other guinea pigs. What do you think? Also how slow do I need to take him now he's lost his friend? Can I handle him/how long do I have to wait. Thank you

I am very sorry for your loss! That must have been ever so upsetting for you! You are welcome to post a tribute in our Rainbow Bridge section to him.

Here are our tips on what you can do for bereaved piggies. Your boy may be withdrawn for a few days. If he goes completely off food and is acutely pining, then you need to get him company asap, otherwise you can search for a good general vet with lots of practice in guinea pig neutering or a specialist with experience in small furry ops in order to minimalise the risks especially of post op complications. Finding a good vet is crucial.
Please be aware that we recommend a full 6 weeks post neutering wait until a boar is 100% safe to go with a sow or two. I have got the unplanned daughter of a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post op boar. Our recommended rescues all practice a 6 weeks post op wait with any neutered boars or any cross gender dating at their rescue. Any girls can live in a next door cage to your boy while he is recovering; it helps to get acquainted and it will give him the necessary stimulation.

You don't necessarily need to neuter- i've had great success with keeping un-neutered boars together.
As long as introductions are done properly and they get on with each other they can have great lives together.
You can always check out your local rescue centres to see if they do anything like guinea pig 'dating' to check out if they get on first.
