First equation.....

(1 run + 1 fleece liner + 1 hay covered litter tray) + (1 cage +1 covering of aubiose + 1 other hay covered litter tray) + 4 piggies = (hardly any poops or wee on run fleece + poops and wee in run litter tray) + (poops and wee everywhere in cage including some in litter tray)

So I thought I would try replacing the aubiose in the cage with fleece because they seem to be great about not going on the fleece in the run. This could make my life much easier! Now equation looks like....

(1 run + 1 fleece liner + 1 hay covered litter tray) + (1 cage +1 fleece liner + 1 other hay covered litter tray) + 4 piggies = (hardly any poops or wee on run fleece + poops and wee in run litter tray) + (poops and wee everywhere in cage, mostly in front of the litter tray, but hardly any in litter tray)

Drat, didn't work. Hmn ok maybe I need to make a double litter tray in the cage for them so they can all climb in to rummage around instead of being stuck at the edges. So now we have....

(1 run + 1 fleece liner) + (1 cage +1 fleece liner + 2 hay covered litter trays next to each other) + 4 piggies = (hardly any poops or wee on run fleece) + (poops and wee everywhere in cage, mostly in front of the litter trays but still hardly any in litter trays)

Drat again! So I need to stop them eating litter tray hay whilst stood on the fleece and pooing. Need to get them to stay in the litter tray to eat. Hmnnn ok so...

(1 run + 1 fleece liner) + (1 cage +1 fleece liner + 2 hay covered litter trays +1 wooden stick bridge used as wall to only leave a small entrance into litter trays) + 4 piggies = (hardly any poops or wee on run fleece) + (more poops and wee in litter tray, but still plenty outside the stick bridge wall and also piggies getting stroppy with each other over hay as one fluffybut blocks the entrance and just sits there and eats, preventing the others from getting in)

OHHHHHH piggies ! Why are they so good about the fleece in their run, but not in their cage?

Now what? I need help to calculate my next move!

(and yes I know the cage fleece liner in the picture below looks clean, but that is because I have had to mine sweep 3 times this morning already!)

hahaha

I'm impressed by their ramp climbing abilities, my girls have had a multi level cage for around 3 weeks now and still not ventured down the ramp! :(

That looks great! I wish I had room for a setup like that! Lucky pigs!

The way to train them first off is to remove all hidies from the cage setup. Then place a little line of food at feeding time up the ramp at intervals to the top. Then withdraw to a safe distance for 10 minutes so as not to disturb them. Theire quest for food and natural urge to explore should then take over. If you have more than two piggies then try and deal with them in pairs on this. For one of mine I also then had to place her part way up the ramp and be on hand to make sure she didn't try to jump off from high up, because otherwise she would just stay at the bottom in the corners. After they have been up the ramp once and are settled at the top, you can always repeat in reverse too, if you have a larger cage setup like mine. Once they have done it once, they will explore again and before you know it they will be charging up and down at break neck speed.

thanks for your nice comments all. But are none of you able to put forward another idea / equation I can try to stop them pooping along the front of the litter trays on the fleece?

I know piggies are difficult to train, but I don;t understand why they do so well in the run half, but so poorly in the cage part.

Nope, sorry. The one thing I've never been able to do is toilet train my piggies :(

They probably are deliberately doing it anywhere but the litter tray to be annoying. They are right trolls when they feel like it. I think you may have to give up :(

Cage looks great! Haha why don't you get the guinea pigs to do the math! :sly:

I really wouldn't worry, the seem to be fairly toilet trained! especially as they keep one side fairly clean, hehe, piggies do poop everywhere, just relax:):):)

Finally I have got the Guinea pig mathematics to make sense!

(1 run + 1 fleece liner + 2 hay covered litter trays + 1 home built ramp/hidie unit) + (1 cage + 2 pigloos + 2 strawberry houses) = most poo in litter trays, some easy spot clean poo in hidies and less mess all round!

Making the cage the chill zone with fleece things to sleep in, and the run the play zone seems to have done the trick. Cage set up now looks like this....

They also use the whole run and cage all day now, rather than spending most of their time in the cage. Yay happy piggies and happy daddy!
