Help, salt my male Guinea pig mood has got a bit more aggressive toward pepper, it started last night, low rumbling shaking of his bottom, following pepper about, and not letting up, pepper quiet a carm Guinea pig, they some time do have a bit of a argument but one backs down, should I split them for a bit or should I just leave them? Anybody have any ideas.

Welcome to the forum.

If there was change in attitude in one of my piggies I would take them to the vet to be checked out as there may be an underlying issue.

This post should be in the Health & Illness section so it will be seen by our Health and Illness specialists. @Wiebke can you pop it in there please?

Thanks.

2 cages combined 10ft long by 3ft wide

Excellent, they’ve got plenty of space.
I wouldnt be concerned about the behaviour as rumbling is normal but if your other piggy starts to become bullied (not allowed to eat and starts losing weight, not allowed to rest etc), then further action is needed, but rumbling is a mild dominance behaviour which they will do throughout their lives

Or maybe not then! I've had a long day and not much sleep last night and I am very tired. Just ignore me!

Hi!

How old are your piggies? It sounds to me like a teenage hormone spike.

Hi!

Sorry, but we can't help you unless you give us the relevant details (like age) and don't leave us guessing whether it is behaviour or illness related.

They’re ten months old.

@Jue it’s a teenage phase thing and not a boar thing. Girls also rumble strut etc when in season.

Thank you!

10 months is one of the hormone peaks in teenage. Many pairs that have so far sailed through them seemingly problem-free can suddenly start with the bigger hormone spikes around 10-12 months when the other boars are already getting past the worst.

Please take the time to read the guide links below as you will find them very helpful in understanding what is going on and what to may brace for. Having plenty of space should help. These huge hormone spikes during teenage and sometimes lingering into adulthood usually last around 2 days. If your other boy is starting to show signs of being stressed or getting worked up as well, you may want to consider a 48 hour separation with a divider, followed by a re-intro on neutral ground outside the cage.

PS: I am moving your thread to our Behaviour section as this is not a health issue.

Thanks very much I did sperate them this afternoon for a bit, salt is slowly getting more tolerable towards pepper.

Please don’t separate them unless they have a full on fight and blood is drawn and you are going to keep them separate permanently. Each time you separate and reintroduce them you make them have to work out their hierarchy and dominance again.
This sounds like a boar hormone spike and a bit of boarish behaviour.

OK thanks, I put them back together early afternoon, everything's is good now👍😁
