Hi my name is Sarah and I am new to the guinea pig forum, I have two little Guinea Pigs called Pickles and Softie which since February have been living indoors, We have now bought them a nice big hutch for the outside and tonight is there second night but I am extremely worried about foxes, Please can anyone advice me. Thank you so much x

Hi welcome to the forum i am new to,

when i first got my pigs they were going to be outdoor pets, i bought a nice big hutch and modified it to keep away the snakes (i live in australia, not something you would have to worry about) however one morning i woke to find a python eying their cage, ever since they have been indoor pigs because i cant stop worrying when they are outside, someone should be able to advise you about protecting against foxes and dont forget to protect against the weather. but i think at the end of the day it depends how comfortable you are in leaving them outside or inside.

Hello and Welcome to the forum. Outdoor hutches are fine. I have two that my 5 guineas live in. I have never had any problems. The only thing is that you have to control the temp. in summer and winter. I have mine either off the ground or reallllly fox proof. Maybe you can post a picture of your hutch?

My piggies are indoors but used to have rabbits outside...however even they are not indoors.

Anyway what I was going to say is you could couble up the chicken wire on the front of the cage. How good are the clips to keep the doors closed? That is what I used to worry about.

Also to keep them warm it is best if their hutch is off the ground and it in bad weather and at night something can be put over the front of the hutch. We bought a huge roll of the stuff which is used for the hucth roof...can't remember *** its called but we put it on top and over the front of the hucth at night to keep it warmer and to stop things getting in.

Hope that helps :)

My piggy is named Pickles too :D ! Totally unrelated to the topic but he says hi to yours :)) !

I have a few outside piggies, and at night we shut them in the garage for warmth, but also so their safe from the foxies. We have chickens and had a bunny (who liked to beat up cats) and we've never had a problem in our area, but the people down the road with chickens set up a camera and there are foxes around. maybe check with chickeny people localy to see what trouble they're having? because if a fox can get into a chicken coup and massacre the residents, you might want to keep your piggies inside for peace (piece?!) of mind.
Put bolts on hutch doors, as those twizzly things will do nothing to stop a fox, and you may want to double up the wire for extra safety.
also, if you have a run seperate from the hutch, you may want to make sure thats equally safe, as my friend had a bunny taken by a fox, in -the day- when -they were there!-
also make sure they're nice and cosy at night, you can get hutch cosys these days, but take them off when it's warm, and in winter you might want to invest in some snugglesafe head pads (I/my girlies love them!) for warmness
love to your piggies!
