Recently, there has been a lot of discussion regarding muesli diets, and I understand that there is a campaign to ban this type of commercial feed from the shelves!

However, I would like to know whether there are other guinea pig keepers who would attempt to continue to offer this type of commercial feed, if it were to disappear from the shelves?! Or would you begin to offer your guinea pigs pellets/nuggets?! Or would you not offer your guinea pigs a commercial feed, and simply offer hay, and fresh food?!

I have muesli but been told its not so go so I have a pellet with added vit c ,I give my guinea small amount of the musli because I have loads left and he does like it x

I have kept small animals, including guinea pigs, and rabbits, for nearly two decades! During this time I have trialled both muesli, and pellets/nuggets, and developed my own opinions where diet is concerned!

However, I am very much concerned that I will not have the option to buy my choice of commercial feed, as a result of this current campaign! Nevertheless, I will not be offering my guinea pigs pellets/nuggets, even if retailers were to remove muesli diets from their shelves!

I feed a small amount of pellets alongside hay and veg etc. so it wouldn't really concern me if muesli wasn't sold any more.

What is your opinion on diet? Why do you prefer muesli over pellets (assuming from this post that you do)?

I feed my 2 a combination of muesli, pellets, veg & hay! Is it wrong to give them the muesli then?

I give mine a choice. They get Wagg Muesli which they eat probably 2/3 to 3/4 of & also pellets which they hardly touch. I've tried just about everything on the market & currently using Vet UKs own which looks just like Harrington's. As hay is 80% of there diet & they also get lots of veggies & fresh grass in the summer & readi-grass in the winter + occasional porridge oats I don't think the dried food matters that much.

I usually give mine Youngs sweet meadow muesli, however my normal stockist has none and wont have any till the end of the week. They did have Burgess Excel nuggets for the pigs and buns, so I bought a bag of each to try. If they won't eat it, they can fill up on veg and grass until their usual stuff is back in stock. ;)

Mine initially had museli, then museli and pellets for a while and now just pellets.
I use harringtons and burgess excel which they all love and it is empty bowls every morning.

I use Sneyds muesli reluctantly though, I seem to throw most of it away. I think the cheeky monkeys pick the best bits out.

Where I got them from used muesli and I tried and tried to get them on nuggets but they weren't having any of it.

I would love to see empty bowls lol.

I have switched from muesli to pellets a few years ago; I feed a mix of Harrington's and Burgess so the piggies still get variety and don't go off a particular brand. An occasional sprinkle of muesli is more in the way of a treat.

I just got fed up with being left with half the muesli all the time, apart from the fact that it is now scientifically proven that muesli is bad for rabbits, and I assume that any results would be the same for piggies. They just make a beeline for the sweet bits and leave the rest. The only piggy that ever showed interest in a mineral wheel was an older lady who'd spent her life on eating muesli; she obviously had deficiencies.

Mine too :)

I feed all sorts, but they get very limited amounts which gets eaten as I also prefer to feed loads of different sorts of hay and fresh veg. Also I find with the Excel nuggets they drink loads and loads of water. More importantly, they have refused point blank to eat any of the last bag of Excel (yes it's well in date but smells sort of stale, but then it always does to me).

Most of the concentrate is fed as a small addition to their diet, not as the main part of it. They get fresh hay 2 - 3 times a day.

I feed mine burgess excell but mix the mint with the blackcurrant so still get variety and they demolish them

I feed mine burgess excel and give them Muesli very rarely for a treat..
I find mine pick the sweet bits from muesli and leave the rest, it's a waste of money
