my guinea pig is about 3 years old i have had him for a year and when i got him his nails where quite badly curled i trim them when needed but is there anything i can put in the cage i have seen people have things such as rock is this a good idea?

I don't know to be honest, though I don't think they scratch to keep their nails short like cats do. I think I would just stick to trimming them as required. I don't think rock or some natural hard surface would be a bad idea necessarily as they would have access to all kinds of surfaces if they were in the wild.

cant remember where i read it, or even if its on this forum- but read about putting a housebrick into piglies run, apparently it helps to wear down their nails & gives them extra excercise getting up & down off of the brick (seems they like a mini 'lookout' post... not that pigglies are inquisitive! ;)
or if they are outdoor piglies a paving slab or placing the run on the corner of a patio, helps to wear down their nails.
i guess as long as it has no sharp edges to cut their feet it wouldn't be a problem. As MargaretB said they would have all sorts of surfaces in the wild.
