As far as possible I would like to avoid having to cut my Guinea's nails. At 10ish weeks old they already seem quite long.

What can I get for them to scratch etc that might keep their nails under control?

I'm not aware that guineas actually scratch at stuff :-\, I know they nibble many many things but I don't think they do scratch, I could be wrong though. I think you'll have to either cut them, or get someone else to cut them - vet or an experienced friend. Ours having a run on slabs with a wooden ramp down from the hutch helps to keep their nails down but they still need trimming to stop them growing too long. There's a thread on here somewhere that explains how to do it, with a bit of confidence it isn't difficult, I do ours and we've only had them 6 months or so O0

Piggies do not scratch the nails down and they will need cutting because overgrown nails are uncomfortable, and can cause mobility problems.

Once you have been shown how to do this by someone, vet, friend who has piggies, rescue owner,or rodentologist.,you should be able to do the clippiing yourself. If the nails are white,it is easy because you can see the bloodline, black nails are more difficult but if you trim a tiny bit on a regular basis they should be ok.Get someone to hold the piggy for you untill you are more experienced, then you will be able to manage on your own.
