Recently we had a guinea pig, Rosy, develop a URI who had to be separated from her cage-mate Einstein. When we reintroduced Rosy back to Einstein, they had to reestablish dominance. After about an hour they seemed to have settled down only chasing from time to time. To my surprise they switched, but that is neither here nor there. Anyways, amidst the chasing, chattering, and rumble strutting of that hour it seems that Einstein got nipped on the lip and got a small wound. Given that we have just dealt with nursing a sick piggy back to health for the last 2 weeks, we would like to be proactive and stop any infection, abscess, or any other illness that may come from a small wound. Any suggestions?

You can make a saline solution to disinfect the wound taken from one of our guides

Saline solution:
Sterile saline is available from any pharmacy.
In an emergency you can make it easily at home by stirring 1 teaspoon of salt into 250 ml / ½ pint of boiled cooled water

I would suggest getting for a check up at vets and possible antibiotics if it deep and not healing. Has it stoped bleeding?

It is not deep at all and doubt it bled at all. Again, it probably is not anything she cannot deal with on her own, but would like to do my best to avoid any further vet expenses haha. The saline solution is exactly what I am looking for. Thank you for your help.

You could always use hibiscrub (you can get some from your local pharmacist), a teaspoon in a cup of warm water to clean it with. Very handy to have in an emergency

Saline solution is fine for a shallow glance blow.

There is a rethink underway re. illness separation as it can lead to the breaking of a bond. It is now more and more acknowledged that separation is a huge additional stress factor impacting on the healing process that should be avoided if at all possible; including operation recovery and with illnesses where a healthy companion's immune system is generally able to fend the illness off, like URI.
