My female 4-year-old guinea pig, Coffee was prescribed Baytril a dosage of 0.6mL for a week by my vet for a probable UTI. She's had it for 4 days now but yesterday was really struggling to eat anything, won't eat any dry food at all and clearly isn't feeling well. I managed to get her to eat a small leaf of lettuce, a tad bit of cabbage, carrot and cucumber, but not a lot of each. I'm aware of the danger of a piggies digestive track not being active and so I tried syringe feeding her dry food mushed up in water yesterday but she just wasn't having it. This morning she has had 5 dandelions which is great and she's been nibbling a tiny bit of hay and drinking water, but I'm just worried that if I give her more antibiotic she will get worse? What should I do?
Thank you!

Hello,

It does sound like the antibiotic has upset her tummy.

Can you get some probiotic? Otherwise make some pop soup using the poo of a healthy guinea pig mushed up with water to try and get her tummy flora better.

Please stop the AB and speak to your vet, if the URI has got better then there is no need to get another AB. The main thing is keeping her system going now with food and syringe feeding.

Please speak to your vet explaining what has happened. Are they pooing okay?

Where are you located please?

Hi, thank you very much for your reply.
I am located in Bath. I can try to find some probiotic, is there a certain brand you'd recommend?

It's unclear whether her URI has cleared up yet as there was never blood in her urine, but I think she may have squeaked this morning while peeing so that's certainly not encouraging. I will keep feeding her anything I can get her to eat. She's avoiding syringe feeding like it's fire unfortunately, but I'll see what I can do.

Yes, she is pooing okay.

URI is Upper respiratory infection - coughing that sort of thing, do you mean a urine infection? How much does she weigh 0.6ml of baytril is a big dose

I would consult a guinea pig savy vet ASAP if you canA
