How's it going?

Archie had a watery discharge from one eye when he had trauma to the inside of his mouth, due to a tooth spur cutting into his cheek.

We have found that by filing teeth every 12 days, we keep on top of any problems.

My vet charges me £15.08 for dental work.

Try cutting up grass into small pieces and adding it to the syringe food. This helps to encourage them to chew food.

How much Metacam are you giving and how often?

Can she eat anything for herself? How much syringe food are you giving per day?

I am willing to have a chat with you on the phone if it would help. xx
HI there, I am having similar problems with my guinea Otis, and I notice 'Furryfriends' has given a lot of great advice. I am syringe feeding my guinea 3-4 syringes of critical care food every 2-3 hours, plus organic carrot baby food and his own food blended, as he'll take it. Is this too much/not enough? He picks at food afterwards and eats little flowers of broccoli, but nothing else. He's 3 days post dental surgery under GA. THANKS x

You need to aim to get about 120mls of syringe food in over 24 hrs. This can be a mixture of the things youre feeding him. Can he eat softened guinea pig food? Also porridge oats are good. Make up to a porridge using boiling water if he prefers.

Is he having any pain relief? His mouth might be sore after dental work.

Thanks. He's receiving 0.14ml daily metacam via oral syringe. Thanks for your advice, I will work out the quantities. My other guinea pig is stepping on this lap top as I write!

Thanks. He's receiving 0.14ml daily metacam via oral syringe. Ive softened his nuggets and cut them in half but he's not really interested. He picks at hay but doesnt seem to be having much luck eating this. I will work out the quantities as you advise. We have a check up appt with the vet on Tuesday. The vet has filed back all his teeth but says his bottom roots are long and may require surgery in the future, (the vet didnt feel the guinea was fit enough for that surgery at that point). Apart from syringe feeding he just hides in his tunnel. There are very few poos considering how much syringe food I'm giving him, and the poos are very soft/small. I'm hoping he's eating them and that's why they're so few.

Thanks again for your help.

sorry, I tried to edit the first entry but was too late; I'm just learning how to use this site! Please ignore 1st entry and just read the second. THANKS

when you syringe feed the nuggets what you need to be doing to enable them to go into the syringe is:

get an egg cup amount and pour boiling water onto them to cover them,

wait 15 mins, then add more boiling water to cover them.

wait another 15mins and then stir with a fork until liquid/paste consistency.

wait until it goes cool and syringe feed, around 30mls per sitting which should take around 20mins to do in first time guinea slaves lol.

x

Update: Otis was taken to the vets a thrid time and they found an abcess; as soon as they cut this open he has returned to normal and is eating and popcorning away again! A happy ending this time :O) Thanks for your advice everyone :O)
