Guinea Pig not eating - help needed!

Yeah, the vet checked her teeth last week n they were ok,she eats ok once i syringe feed her so I'm guessing her teeth are fine, its just her appetite thats away.I'm due to feed and water her at 630-7ish so i will see how she copes this time..

I dont have an answer but wanted to say good luck and i hope she gets better soon. It breaks your heart to see them poorly. Sending hugs <0>

She doesnt eat for herself, she does look a bit better today tho but she is still very down looking, her eyes are a lot brighter looking today than yesterday so heres hoping.. I just fed her and she wasnt bad at taking the baby food as its a bit sweeter for her so ill keep with the feeding and if she isnt better by saturday latest i will contact apex vets about taking her up there..

Firstly I am pleased that the vet thinks she is still worth saving. I am somewaht surprised the vet felt no need to provide any medication - but I am hoping that this is a good sign. Is she pooing and peeing OK? What size are her poops at the moment? Did the vet say she might have bloat?

I am slightly concerned about her reliance on baby food ... this is overprocessed and contains high carbohydrates for piggies....it gives my piggies bloat and it could be this which has sparked the bloat episode with Mia. So, if you let me know your address - I will send you some sachets of Supreme Recovery (and some nuggets you can mash up with hot water) in the post tomorrow - mine will eat this off a spoon without the need for syringe feeding.

Finally the bottom line is that she is not eating for herself - this could have been a bloat episode caused by too much fresh greens/spring grass......but then there is the head turning/restlessness which seen to be the first symptoms you noted..Hmmm

I do not think she is out of the woods yet and like Furry Friends I am rather concerned that no definitive diagnosis has been made. Although I travel a lot I am not coming north of Watford gap in the next few weeks (and I have just come back down from a weekend in Leeds so what poor timing!). It's a shame I'm at the very opposite end of the country otherwise I would offer to drive your piggie and you to a cavy savvy vet who will be able to give you a diagnosis and treatment regime instead of what you have had to date which is what I call the "wait and see" approach.

Please keep posting updates and syringe feeding her - it is the syringe feeding that is keeping her going at the moment. Hopefully this is just one of those "blips" our piggies put us through from time to time (they do like to keep us on our toes rolleyes)

x

If your piggie is relying entirely on syringe food you must ensure you are getting enough into her to keep her going. 120 mls per 24 hours is the minimum, and I would urge you to use mushed up pellets or something like Critical Care or Science Recovery. Obviously, the longer your piggie fails to eat on her own, then she is in danger of developing dental issues as her teeth will start to overgrow. However, for now it's more important to keep her alive and get a proper diagnosis of what's making her unwell. As well as the mushed up guinea pig food you can also puree her favourite vegetables.

Do you weigh her? I would suggest you keep an eye on her weight as this will give you an indication of whether you are syringe feeding her enough.

aaw i hope piggy is ok. i wish you had a decent davy savvy vet. please keep searching for one and dont give up on mia. if only * lived closer to pebble (i often think that meself lol)

get well soon mia we want some pigtures xx

Hey guys,Mia has been eating sweetcorn, spinach leaves, watercress and cucumber in very small amounts but i guess thats a good sign! Her back legs don't seem to want to work though ive been feeding her frequently sometime with syringe if shes being awkward but shes getting better at eating on her own.The poo's she is doing look really small and dry and she pee'd on my t-shirt last night also (think that was her getting her own back for me force feeding her!) i had her cage up in my room beside my bed last night so i was checking her through the nite and offering food but had to force feed her again this morning..

Hi James, great news that Mia is feeding herself, however I'd recommend to keep syringe feeding her until she seems totally back to normal unfortunately. It's for her own benefit. Sounds like as her poos are still very small that she's not functioning fully gut-wise yet. Keep on with the probiotics too xx

P.s Pebble thanks very much although i dont know how to post you a private message,as i don't want to post my adress over the net (no offence intended guys) i would really appreciate that though..

Hi James and Mia sorry just seen your post......i'm sorry to hear about little Mia :...
Keep up the syringe feeding, make sure too that she's also getting fluids
Whee wish you all the very very best and send lots of healing wheeeeeeeeeeks from the girls and I xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Furryfriends is admin so she maybe able to help with passing on info to Pebbles for you :)

GOOD LUCK FOR MIA xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My major concern is the fact she's lost her balance and use of her back legs, her front legs seem ok out of a bad situation, does anyone know if the movement in the legs will come back soon if shes being feed often or is this just another heartbreaking bad sign?

Have just spotted this - scroll down to paralysed back legs :(

Another person with a similar issue:

Thanks,There is no way from whati have seen thats she has been hurt, she is in with Molly (a re-homed guinea who is 3-4 month older) and they get on great, unless they have had a scuffle etc but i very much doubt it and the legs worked a week ago when i took her down to the vets and she checked everything over its only been in the last few days that her legs have given way and she falls on her side when lying down unless propt up with towelsor pillows..

One of my pigs lost the use of his back legs, although he was a much older pig, and I gave him liquid osteocare for a few days and he regained the use of his legs. I gave 1 ml twice a day for the first day and then dropped down to a dose of 0.5 ml twice a day for three days.

What concerns me is that there are other symptoms too and not just paralysis.

I really think you need to get Mia to a guinea pig savvy vet as soon as you possibly can. Could she have had a stroke I wonder?

A stroke at so young? I really hope not.. The thing with the symptoms, there are so many problems with the same ones.Ive tried her seeds in the blender and fed to her that way, carrots, cucumber, spinach leaves, lettuce, probiotics(still taking that) baby food and water with vitamin c droplets,I'm at wits end at what to do as i phoned apex vets and there over the phone diagnosis was that she was maybe too far gone so i havent wanted to uproot her with a 1.5-2 hour car journey to falkirk, she's definetly a little fighter but i would just like to be abletodomore to help her recover, because i'm sure as hell not having her put down unless she is in pain which she doesnt't seem to be at the moment,it looks a lot more like frustration, although its as if her little body has given up and her minds fighting it..

P.s FurryFreinds is there anyway you could passon my home adress to Pebble as i would really appreciate the offer of the recovery sachets before its too late?

Email it to me at [email protected]
Strokes can affect any age but there seems to be such a lot of symptoms.
Have you tried mushing up Wagg Optimum or the Burgess Blackcurrant and Oregano food. It's just as good as using recovery food. Try and get as much food into her over the weekend and then get her to a vet on Monday.

Really devastated to say that mia's away! She was put to sleep first thing this morning as she was in pain through the night and i wasn't goin to be selfish and keep her trapped in her body that had given up..She was all i could ask for she was a little beauty....Anyway thanks for all the help and advice guys kindest regards..

I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been lurking this thread the past few days, after having my own pig with eating problems over the weekend & hoping to pick up any tips or info that could help. Sadly my girl passed away this morning too.

From what I've read on here, you did the best you could for Mia, & that's all we can do.

Lots of hugs to you xx

So very sorry to hear the sad news about Mia....RIP little piggy...

I'm so sorry little Mia didn't win her fight. Sweet dreams Mia.
