Hi i have a 4 year old guinea pig, she went in to have the molars trimmed today as it was stopping her from being able to eat. Before this she was a very talkative pig who ate a lot however i'm a little worried after the dental work she is showing no signs of eating, she is just laying there. my vet said he didn't give her any painkillers could this be the reason why? what can i do to interest her in the food? if there is no improvement by tomorrow evening i will be taking her back to the vets. But is it normal for her to be like this after getting it done? Please help!

Where are you based?

You will need to syringe feed your piggy, once she is capable of eating she will start eating.

Painkillers would certainly help her.

I'm going to have a look for the hand feeding guide - you can syringe feed her either critical care if the vet gave you some or guinea pig pellets if you don't have any critical care.

He did mention the syringe feeding if she didn't eat, i have tried to give her something however she doesn't seem interested in that at all. is it too early to try and maybe give it some time?

If she's not eating I would follow the syringe feeding guide. Last thing you want is her guts slowing down as gut stasis can come on quickly.

Have you tried her favourite veggies?

Are you in the UK?

Please hand feed asap. She will feel hopefully better once she has got some food in. Most guinea pigs don't eat straight away after dental procedures and she can have a negative response if it was done under general anaesthesia. She is also likely to need painkiller as her mouth will be very sore after the filing and the overgrowth.

What exactly did the vet do to the teeth? Were they trapping the tongue? Was there ulceration to the cheek? There is a good chance your guinea pig will have a sore mouth and may not want to eat. How guinea pig savvy is your vet? Was the dental done under GA? Sorry for all the questions but just trying to get as much info so I can give you the best advice. I run a sanctuary for guinea pigs with dental issues so have lots of experience.

They weren't trapping the teeth and he didn't see any damage to the mouth, as we caught it quick. She was put under ga though. She has started to get more energy and moving after food and water via syringe feeding. However she is still just laying most of the time, earlier she did try to use the water bottle but stopped and re tried so thinking her mouth is sore because he didn't give pain killers. Is there anyway I can help the pain?

So is your piggy eating less well after the dental, than before? What was happening prior to the dental that made the vet think it was the teeth? Please contact your vet and ask about some pain relief.

She was eating less after the dental, I did say to the vet I thought there was other issues however they disagreed unfortunately she passed away this morning confirming my suspicion that there was indeed another problem. Let's just say I will not be going back to that vets!
