I f you had a guinea pig who is approx 4.5 yrs old who has started to fall to her side and walk intermittingly still eating and drinking but seems to have a slightly strange breathing noise, would you be worried?
Vet I think felt I was making a big fuss over an old piggiemallethead

I have to go to Leicester with my daughter tomorrow to look around a uni , my eldest son will be in charge and is very good with all the piggies, I am so worried though...

It could be old age or it could be paralysis. Someone else with more experience might be more helpful than me.

However if it is paralysis, don't fret as there are a few things you can do to get them walking again, depending on why the legs are paralysed.

Hi Sall,

When you say she falls on her side and walks, do you mean she falls over occasionally then gets up and walks normally, or do you mean she occasionally lays on her side with her legs moving? When did she start doing this, and how often does she do it?

Hi I have only noticed it earlier today and sometimes she will walk normally, but slowly.

Am I understanding this right if I say that your guinea:

- Developed symptoms seemingly 'overnight';
- Has difficulties moving;
- Has problems with balance;
- Has a breathing difficulty/noisy breathing.

If all of the above sounds accurate, I would wonder about the possibility of a stroke. The sudden imbalance sounds like a fairly typical symptom.

Hi yes all of the above,Treacle and her mate Button have only been with me a week when I answered a free ad saying that 2 4 year old sows needed a new home , I was suprised at how well they seemed when they arrived, they have been fine and I was going to bathe them today but obviously changed my mind.The vet seemed unbothered really and said to bring her back nxt week if no change.:(

Treacle has just died in my arms with her mate Button beside her.She became much worse this p.m hardly holding her head up no noise very peaceful though.If the vet had pts this afternoon maybe she wouldn't have suffered at all though, I don't know, I was happy to give her a chance.

Sad news. She would not have been in any pain. It was better for her to die at home, with her mate at her side, than to be put down by the vet.
It could have been either a stroke or heart failure that she had.

So sorry to hear about your pig, but at least you got the chance to be with her in her last moments. I think its always nice for the pig that way as they would probably be alot more scared on their own.

RIP Treacle :( xx

I am sorry Treacle passed away. You did what you could for her, and having you hold her as she passed will have been some comfort to her. xx

I am sorry that Treacle passed away - at least she could pass the best way possible: held by somebody who loved her and with her mate at her side!

Thanks everyone for your kindness, I have been reading Peter Gurney and I think it was heart failure.
It is so difficult as I hadn't had her from a baby so didn't know her history, when I took her and her sis the previous owners couldn't even say how old they were!
Anyway will now try and bond the two lonely sows, both have lost their partners so will hope for the best.sx

Good luck with the bonding. Fingers crossed for both of them.
x
