Junior Guinea Pig
Hello everyone!
It’s been a few years since I last logged in here...apologies! Life got in the way I guess.
My 4 year old lone male (lost his partner in crime 2 months ago) went off his food yesterday. I checked him over and found he had a damp bum. He’s never had that before so I thought something must be bothering him for him to not bother keeping himself clean. Last night I swear I saw 2 tiny maggots on his skin. No where near his bum though. I picked them off and my eyesight isn’t the greatest but I’d say I was 99% sure they were moving.
I’ve no experience with flystrike and google searches only brought up maggots that were quite big. But it would explain the not eating wouldn’t it?
Anyway, at the vets we couldn’t find any more of these tiny maggots I thought I saw (I’d say they were a mm in length, so tiny) but he’s been given and anti inflammatory injection, a spot on treatment and something like critical care.
I’m of course keeping him close to me today and checking him constantly for maggots but maybe I over reacted? Something is definitely wrong though as he was off his food yesterday. Since we’ve been back he’s had a small amount of veg and he lapped up the critical care stuff which I’m taking as a good sign.
I just hope in my panic to the vet saying I thought he had flystrike made the vet overlook another problem? He didn’t seem too concerned though.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Sorry for the ramble I just want him to be feeling better already
